For years, I thought health and weight loss were about one thing: trying harder. More workouts. More rules. More willpower. But here’s the truth I wish someone had whispered in my ear sooner: the harder you try, the more ridiculous it gets.

I learned this lesson the hard way, in Hawaii, of all places.

My Hawaii Meltdown

Picture this: paradise all around me, white sand, palm trees, the sound of the ocean, and instead of enjoying it, I was melting down inside my head.

I couldn’t stop the mental soundtrack:

Did I earn this Mai Tai?

Should I have worked out harder before this trip?

Was my stomach flat enough to be here?

I wasn’t on vacation. I was on trial. And I was both the judge and the jury.

Then I looked around. The locals weren’t hiding under cover-ups or calculating their food. They were laughing, playing, living. It hit me like a coconut to the head: I was missing my own life because I was too busy being the food and body police.

The Birth of the Flip Flop Life

On the flight home, I started rage-writing in my journal. Out came what I now call The Flip Flop Life Manifesto. At the time, I shoved it onto a hard drive and forgot about it.

Fast forward six years, and I realized something powerful: every word I wrote still made sense. Women everywhere were exhausted from white-knuckling their way through diet culture. And we’re done.

Done with:

Earning our food.

Treating our bodies like fixer-upper projects.

Believing we’re broken because the quick-fix programs don’t work.

The Flip Flop Life is about ease, flow, and living in the now — not waiting until we lose 15 pounds to finally feel good.

The Boring Basics That Actually Work

Here’s the part no one in the fitness industry wants you to know: real change doesn’t happen in 30 days. It doesn’t come from quick-fix detoxes, shiny supplements, or punishing workouts.

It comes from what I call the boring basics:

Sleep

Stress management

Strength training

Protein and fiber

Consistency over time

Unsexy? Yep. Effective? 100%.

Why Letting It Be Easy Is Revolutionary

Diet culture taught us health is like building IKEA furniture: miss one step, and the whole thing is ruined. But your health isn’t fragile. One cookie, one missed workout, one skipped salad, none of that breaks you.

The magic happens when you stop overcomplicating and let it be easy. When you choose meals you actually enjoy. When workouts feel doable instead of punishing. When sleep becomes a flex instead of a badge of shame.

And here’s the kicker: no one’s handing out gold stars for suffering.

So Where Do You Start?

Instead of trying to master all the things, pick 1–3 habits that feel challenging but doable. Forget the 10-item checklist. Forget the punishment. Start where you are, with what you can actually stick to.

And then watch how much more space you create in your brain and your life. Space to enjoy dinner with friends, relax on vacation, even just notice the sun when you wake up.

That’s the Flip Flop Life. And it’s available to you right now.

👉 If you’re tired of the mental gymnastics and ready to try a different way, stick around — this is exactly what I help women create.

You ever have one of those weeks where you swear, this is it—this is the week you get back on track… and then life walks in like it owns the place before your coffee even cools?

Yeah, same.

One of my clients recently came to me and said, “Kim, I’m ready to stop obsessing. I’m done with the cutting, the restricting—I just want to feel good in my body.” And I was like: been there, got the t-shirt, burned it, and built a better one.

We created a plan. We worked on food quality, increased her calories, and focused on building trust—with her body and with food. Three weeks in, she was rocking it. But then… one off week, and she spiraled.

“I missed some protein, my steps were low, I didn’t love what I was eating… maybe maintenance isn’t for me.”

Whoa. Sound familiar?

You Don’t Need Perfect. You Need Peace.

Most of us were raised on the idea that if we don’t nail it immediately, we’ve failed. We’re wired to think that if every box isn’t checked, the whole thing is trash. But real talk? That thinking is what’s actually keeping you stuck.

You’ve been taught to believe there’s only one “right” way:

The exact steps

The strict menu

The all-or-nothing blueprint

But that’s not life. That’s a Pinterest board.

So What Do You Actually Need?

Another plan?
Another challenge?
Another set of macros to obsess over?

Nah.

The average woman over 40 has tried 16 diets in her lifetime. SIXTEEN. So if another plan was the solution, it would’ve worked by now, right?

What you probably really need is:

Freedom to live without food rules running your brain

Flexibility to adjust with your season of life

Someone in your corner when you’re about to spiral and just want the bagel (no judgment)

For me, I needed a routine that flexed with my life. Not a free-for-all, but not a straightjacket either. Just something that let me live between a 5 and a 7 on the restriction scale. Not white-knuckling, but not face-first in the pantry either.

You’re Not Inconsistent—Your Strategy Is.

So many of my clients say, “I just can’t get back to what I was doing before.”
And to that, I say… good. Maybe what you were doing before doesn’t work anymore. Maybe it never actually worked—it just felt “successful” because it checked all the boxes.

The truth? We have seasons.
Some seasons are go-go-go, others are slow and steady.
Success isn’t doing all the things, all the time. It’s choosing the right things, for right now.

Drop the Perfection. Pick the Pace.

I used to believe that if I didn’t work out five times a week, I’d failed. Now? I’m okay with three. Heck, some weeks that’s a win. Because it’s not about being perfect—it’s about making peace with your pace.

And that mindset didn’t magically appear. It took time. Years, in fact. I had to unlearn the perfection programming that told me anything less than 100% was worthless.

But here’s the shift: when you stop micromanaging every bite, every step, every move… you start showing up from a place of self-respect, not self-control.

Ready for Support That Actually Fits You?

What if the problem isn’t that you “fell off”—but that you’ve simply outgrown your old plan?

Your body’s different.
Your time is different.
Your priorities? Also different.

So what if your support system reflected that?

I’m building something new—something that flexes with your life instead of fighting against it. But I’m not guessing what you need. I want you to tell me.

💬 Drop a comment with the word “FLOW” and I’ll send you a short, zero-pressure survey. It’s quick, anonymous if you want it to be, and if you leave your email, I might just send you a free coffee on me (because queens need fuel).

Let’s co-create something that doesn’t ask you to be perfect—just real.

Your body isn’t broken.
She’s just tired of being ignored.

It is really challenging to figure out where I spend my attention when it comes to health and fitness. As most of my listeners here, we are ladies in our 40s and older. We have been on the leading edge of diet culture; we grew up with it all. So, it’s really easy to see why it is so confusing.

In this blog, I want to give you these 6 things we can do so that if we focus on them, we have a great shot at living a healthy life! For many of us and the clients I work with, we fall into 3 buckets.
1. Clients clearly want to lose weight.
2. Clients who want to maintain what they got.
3. Clients who want to find peace in their bodies and are like me, former competitors that want to get away from the regimented schedule.
When I say weight loss, I am talking about all of these 3 categories we fall into.

So what do you focus on it. Let’s start with an analogy I want you to picture a glass vase and think about how you can fill a glass vase with the least amount of water. The water here is equal to your effort. And I want you to spend the minimal amount of water/effort to put in here. So, what if I found rocks big enough to fill 80% of the cylinder and then I can fill pebbles, sand, and then water? Those BIG rocks are going to give us the BIGGEST bang for your buck.

Let’s talk about those big rocks and then the little pebbles that will fill the rest. Remember, if you prioritize those big rocks first, if you focus on those then you will be ensuring you are focusing on the things that really matter and letting the small things fit in and around them. Most of us are getting bogged down by the small pebbles and sand and leaving little to no energy for the big rocks that need to be our focus.

The 2 biggest rocks I see for many women that I want to touch on first are; Sleep and Stress Management. These two things go hand in hand. We tell ourselves we are going to sleep when we’re dead. But you need to know that sleep is so crucial for our overall health and well-being. It helps us maintain a healthy weight, it helps with our immune system, it helps with our memory, and it helps promote OVERALL health!

Sleep.
Sleep is one of those crucial things that any person needs to make sure that they are getting enough sleep. How can you make yourself a bedtime ritual? As adults we lose this, so how can we get it back? Set a bedtime and start there! How can I make our sleep a little better? What can we do before bed to help us wind down and get us ready for bed? Magnesium, tea, reading, meditation, a hot bath, etc. What can I do to unwind before bed? A little tip… If you suffer from hot flashes… keep a handheld fan by my bed! Trust me, it is a lifesaver!

Stress.
So many of us normalize stress, this is how my life is, this is what I do! There is a staggering statistic on what stress leads to chronically. Mental health issues, depression, heart disease, blood pressure, etc. Managing our stress will help us to manage our overall health and moods, energy levels, relationships with people and even stress eating.

Sometimes we need to sit in uncomfortable shit before we can name what that stress is. What can you control? What can you not control? What can I influence and what is out of my control? There are certain things I cannot control, and here is where I needed to let go so that I can break from circle of doom. I felt like shit in that circle, and I had to pull myself out and change my thoughts. It was a challenge, but I was able to do it and so can you.

It starts with finding things that you love…. And do it. Sure exercise or move your body is great however I challenge you to find out outlets, sleep, or take mental health days. I love Byron Katie and I learned from her about asking yourself these 4 questions when it comes to stress.
1. Put a name on it. What is stressing you out?
2. Is “blank” stressing you out or are the actions stressing you out?
3. How do you react when you believe that thought?
4. What would you be without that thought?
Stress is hard and it is a process… but I know for me, I can’t be in this world of stress anymore.

Nutrition.
I would put nutrition as a rock BECAUSE when I don’t sleep, I’m looking for sugar-filled, carbohydrate foods. When we’re stressed, we get a dopamine hit because of eating.
When it comes to nutrition, I’m not saying eat less, I am saying eat better! What can I focus on regarding the quality of food? Can we take out processed foods? Can we shop the parameters of the store where we find whole foods and minimally processed foods? Are you eating enough protein? Are you eating enough vegetables?

Track your food for a few days or a week and see what your food looks like. We need data! Sometimes we think we are eating less than what we actually are. And sometimes we aren’t eating enough! Clean up your nutrition and if it seems too overwhelming, start with 1 meal a day to work on cleaning up!

Mindset.
There are 4 mindsets that many of us fall into. This is where we have to own our mindset and mindset is like GPS. You are driving and you know exactly how to get home but the GPS says traffic is building up ahead, take this exit and you have never taken it before… Here are the 4 mindsets!
1. The first mindset says, “What the hell is this exit? I know where to go even if I’m stuck in traffic, I’m not getting off.”
2. The second one says “Ohh… I don’t know if I should do this. Do I do this, do I stay the course?” They are Indecisive and uncertain, but then stay the route you are on.
3. The third says, “I am going to get off but what if there are roadblocks? Can I overcome the roadblocks? Can I handle them?”
4. The fourth says, “As long as I am moving, I am happy. As long as I am moving in the direction of my goal, I’m good to go!”

So, how do I shift my mindset? We have to see ourselves being successful, and success may be different than what we imagine it to be. So many of us are stuck in that certain way and it has to be hard, and it has to be this way. This was me, I had to eat a certain way, or it wouldn’t work. I had to go to the gym 2 hours a day or why go? I had to say was this for me. Is this how I wanted to live my life? I had to ask myself hard ass questions. I had to put the mindset piece before the exercise!

Self-care.
This isn’t getting manicures and pedicures. This is something that can just be 5 minutes a day. My bedtime ritual is my self-care and every morning I journal, which is another form of self-care. You can also meditate, do breathwork, take a bath, go on a walk, draw or color, work with your hands or garden. Find some quiet time and do what you enjoy. Whatever brings you joy, do and remember, it doesn’t have to cost money either!

Exercise.
Some of you say exercise is the only way you can manage your stress, but exercise is a stressor because it puts stress on our nervous system. If our nervous system is already in a wired state, we are just putting gas on the fire. Can we pull down the intensity but still get the same feeling? Do a little strength training – to keep our muscles strong and toned and to help our metabolism. This can be done at home too for at least 2-3 days a week 15 minutes minimum! Or simply go for a walk!

I wanted to have his conversation because I want us all to realize that we have choices. If I start to prioritize the important things and make sure they come first I am not going to get bogged down by the little things. Prioritize the big rocks, the things that truly matter, and see if the small things fit in around them. We talked about these 6 areas of focus, where would you need to focus? What is the easiest thing to focus on and what is the hardest thing for you to focus on?

Why you can’t always be on a diet… I did a podcast on this about a year ago, but I feel like this has to be revisited and talked about again. So many of you come to me and say, “Oh, if I only had a plan I would be more disciplined, I would lose belly fat, I would lose weight, etc..” But ladies…. you cannot always be on a diet, I repeat… you cannot always be on a diet!

It is always going to be that you look at yourself in the mirror, you don’t like what you see, you google the shit out of what to do, looking for a diet, thinking you found the solution, then you diet! You don’t get the results you want or it becomes too hard, and you FALL OFF track and you are like oh you need to get back on track and the cycle continues!

How many people fall into this? How many women… I looked this up!! – By age 45, the average women have been on at least 61 different diets! That is for 1 person!!! That is a hell of a lot of diets!! The average age women start to diet or change their bodies is the AGE of 10!!! For 30-something years you have found a way to diet. This is absolutely ridiculous! And, on top of this, 45% of all US women are on a some type of diet at any given time. Here is the question I have to ask you, if we have been on 65 diets, wouldn’t that mean that SOMETHING IS NOT WORKING FOR YOU??? Have you gotten the results and have you kept them? No, you haven’t!

You have to fully consider that it is the constant dieting that is keeping us stuck. It is beating our bodies into submission, and it just isn’t working anymore. As you talk about your metabolism and body, how are you feeling in your body? Are you constantly pulling things – no carbs, no sugar, no joy? Or are you making sure your body is satiated and satisfied?

Let’s talk about low metabolism.
You don’t want a crazy fast metabolism because that kicks off our cravings and hunger. You don’t want a fast metabolism; you want a FLEXIBLE metabolism. And because you have been on so many diets, you have BROKEN your metabolism! In order to create a more flexible metabolism, more stable metabolism, be able to balance out hunger and energy, and cravings, you need to eat a little more. you need to increase our eating. As you go through this diet. I want you to think about what is on the other side. You did this for 12 weeks, 30 days, what is on the other side? What is the long-term lifestyle?

It’s easy to get very short-sided and only think about the short term.. And I am all about what is the long term for you. What is going to be realistic for you on the backside of this? Are you excited about what is happening here? Can you make a plan for this in our life? It is possible for you to get a flexible and efficient metabolism without dieting and by actually feeling sane! This helps us to better manage our long-term weight so it’s not these giant peaks and valleys. If you feel like you are always on this crazy roller coaster ride and if you want off, keep reading!

What is metabolism?
It is the rate at which you burn calories. That is, it! And when it comes to your metabolism, mine is different from yours and everyone else. No 2 are the same.
I recently did a dexa scan and my test came back that I need 1600 calories a day just for my daily acts of living, so just to live! What are your daily total energy expenditures? What do I need to just maintain the current weight that I am at right now? My base level of calories to just get through my life without feeling over-consuming or under consuming is 2200 calories! See the huge gap!?

Now, if I am looking to lose weight, I am not going to immediately say I am dropping down to 1600 calories. At this point, I would be restricting too much food. Then fall off and repeat.

I like to look at dieting as seasons. There are times when I am dieting, but there are times when I am not, and I am working my way back to maintenance and near maintenance. Then there are times I am going to up my food and exercise, as well as other times when I am going to bring those down. And I always tell people that it is based on your schedule! We all have different seasons in our life.

As you go through our life you aren’t always restrict, restrict, restrict so I have those moments of time when I am eating more than eating less. And the thing here is that many of us don’t like to do it. You cannot be in the cycle of constant dieting. It takes a toll on our bodies, and it takes a HUGE toll on our hormones.

So in addition to eating a specific amount of calories, you also need to do strength training for 15-30 minutes 2-3 times a week. Lift what is challenging yet doable. And start it now so it is just what you do by the time you get to your 60s and 70s. Can you make a commitment to 2-3 days, 30 minutes, or less? (NOT 7 days a week!) You want to start to feel like you have control in your life and your life Isn’t about constantly controlling food.

And so, when you start to give yourselves those moments in time when you’re not following a diet, you’re not restricting, you’re not depriving and you’re giving our bodies more food. It’s strategic. You are being strategic in how you’re planning through this. And one of the biggest challenges is that many of us don’t have a plan. You just wake up one day and the emotion takes over. You look at the scale and you are like oh dang…

Here is where you sit back and say let’s look at this over 90 days. Look at it during this diet break or this moment of time when we are not dieting, and you are listening to your body and fueling it properly! You may put on a little more scale weight, but I want you to flip to our non-scale things.
● Do I have less hunger?
● How is my sleep?
● Are my hot flashes decreasing?
● Do I have less joint pain?
● Am I less moody, depressed, or anxious?
● How do I feel at the gym?

As you start to take these diet breaks that is what we are looking for! And as we are doing this, we are slowly adding on the calories. So, I know some of you are not going to like this, but spend just 7 days tracking your food. On paper or cell phone apps. We need to have data. What is going on with us and what am I consuming.

So for example, if my max calories are 2300, I am roughly eating 1900. I am going to start off eating 2000 to 2100 a day. In the first week, I am eating 1900 calories and seeing how I am feeling. I can play with increasing my calories, and use it with data, not emotions. So small increase at a time, a baby step process. What am I eating? Is the focus protein? Writing down portions as well.

You can’t diet forever…
Step 1 – Tell yourself you cannot be on a diet forever. Diets are never always going to be the end all be all to help you get through this. Understand what is going on with me. 7 days (like I said above) eat as a regular person. Assess and gather data.

Step 2 – Now we have data. This is how many calories I am taking in. Keep the plan for 2 weeks. See how you feel! How is sleep, etc. (look over the bulleted questions above)

Step 3 – Analyze and evaluate. I feel good with 2000 and let’s stick with it OR let’s move it up to 2100 calories. Tweak it so our bodies can see where we feel good! So if we ever go back into a diet phase we can be used to adjusting the dial.

There is no black and white, this is very nuanced. This is what I work with my clients on! You don’t have to do this alone. I want to be there to help and support you the best I can. Because this is a process. This is all very strategic. Creating a plan and sticking with a plan.

I always work with my REPS method. I always want you to think about what is realistic at this moment. What am I excited about? What can I make a plan for in my life? And most important, sustainability. This approach right here where we have these diet breaks, and we aren’t always finding a way to restrict constrict and deprive. We are slowly strategically adding in a few more calories so we can have this long-term sustainability.

Do you feel like you are always dieting? Does this sound like you? Let’s have a conversation. I don’t want you to think you have to do this on your own. I want you to feel supported. We are a team. Let’s find your comfort level with the steps and remove the negative talk! How can we tweak what you are doing? We are going to do it in these 6 steps.
1. Collect data.
2. What does data tell us?
3. How can we take data and tweak it?
4. Make some tweaks.
5. See how it works.
6. Evaluate it and follow the loop.

I want you to know that there are always going to be tweaked along the way. WE CAN ALWAYS make changes when we are working together. We are like a radio station dial that can be slowly tuned from one way to the next with small strategic swings!!
