Do You Ever Feel Like You’re the Only One Who Uses Food When You’re Stressed or Bored?

You’re standing in the kitchen.
Eating straight out of the container.
Not because you’re hungry… but because something feels off.

And somewhere in your head you’re thinking,
“Why am I doing this again?”

If that feels familiar, you’re not alone.
And more importantly, you’re not broken.

This exact moment is what sparked my recent Fit Girl Magic podcast conversation with Paige Alexander, nurse, wellness coach, and co-founder of Real Food Recovery. And what we unpacked might completely change how you see your relationship with food.

This Isn’t a Willpower Problem

One of the biggest myths women carry is that if they just had more discipline, food wouldn’t feel so hard.

But here’s the truth:
That moment isn’t about discipline at all.

It’s your brain doing what it’s wired to do.

Your brain is constantly scanning for comfort, relief, and safety. When you’re stressed, bored, overwhelmed, or mentally fried, it looks for the fastest way to feel better.

Ultra-processed foods deliver that relief fast.
They light up dopamine pathways almost instantly.

That’s why “just try harder” works… until it doesn’t.

When Food Starts Doing Emotional Labor

If you eat when you’re bored, stressed, tired, lonely, or avoiding your own thoughts, food has been given a bigger job than it was ever meant to have.

That doesn’t mean you’re addicted in some dramatic, scary way.
It means food has become a coping tool.

And here’s the key shift:
That’s not a failure.
It’s a signal.

A signal that your nervous system needs support.

Why Ultra-Processed Foods Hit Differently

One of the most eye-opening parts of this conversation is understanding that not all food affects the brain the same way.

Single-ingredient, whole foods register in your gut.
Ultra-processed foods register in your brain.

That’s why an apple eventually makes you feel satisfied…
but a cookie makes your brain say, “More. Now.”

This isn’t about morality or “good vs bad” food.
It’s about biology.

When ultra-processed foods enter the picture, hunger cues shut down, cravings increase, and impulse control drops.

That’s not a personal flaw.
That’s chemistry.

Why Willpower Keeps Letting You Down

Willpower is limited.
Stress, poor sleep, decision fatigue, and emotional load all drain it.

So relying on willpower is like trying to wrestle a grizzly bear with positive affirmations.

What actually works better?

structure

planning ahead

reducing decisions

supporting your brain before cravings hit

As Paige put it, the day starts the night before. Not with perfection. With preparation.

The Real Shift Isn’t More Rules

This is the part most women don’t expect.

The answer isn’t:

tighter food rules

more restriction

another plan you have to “be good at”

The shift is learning how to support your brain instead of fighting it.

That might mean:

prioritizing sleep before changing food

removing ultra-processed trigger foods from your environment

planning for stressful moments instead of white-knuckling them

understanding which foods light you up… and which ones send you into a spiral

It’s less about control.
More about awareness.

You’re Not Alone in This

If food has been doing emotional work in your life lately, that doesn’t mean you’re weak.

It means you’re human.
Living in a world that asks a lot of you.

This conversation isn’t about blame.
It’s about clarity.

And sometimes clarity is the most freeing thing of all.

If this resonated, you don’t need to fix anything today.
Just notice.

That’s often where real change starts.
