Well times have certainly changed since I was a kid. Our after school snacks weren’t sugar filled. My diabetic grandmother took care of us after school, so sugary treated weren’t an option. I didn’t realize that yogurt was a health food until the 8th grade, I thought everyone ate it. How naive was I that I also thought raisins, I mean actual non-coated raisins were candy.

Let’s stop using our kids as the excuse to buy/eat junk food. Here are some options that your kids and you may like.

Fresh/Frozen (no sugar added) fruits – berries, bananas, oranges, pineapple, melons or apples

Fresh veggies (hold the ranch dipping sauce) (need a dipping sauce try hummus) – celery, baby carrots, cucumbers, broccoli, cauliflower, peppers, mushroom or jicama

Dried fruit/veggies –raisins, prunes, dates, figs, berries, green beans, carrots, parsnips

Nuts – pistachios, almonds, walnuts

Have other suggestions; just leave them in the comments below.
