Raise your hand if your metabolism feels more like it’s running on decaf… when what you really need is double espresso energy.
Same, girl. Same.

For years, the solution we were sold was:
Eat less.
Cardio more.
White-knuckle your way to skinny.

But what if the real magic move wasn’t about eating less… but actually eating more?

I promise—this isn’t a prank. And no, this isn’t a license to go face-first into a pizza (though we’re not anti-pizza around here).

Let’s talk about the real strategy for healing your tired metabolism—especially if you’re a woman over 40—and it’s called: Reverse Dieting.

So What Even IS a Reverse Diet?

You know I love a solid definition.

If you’ve been chronically dieting—eating low-cal, skipping meals, doing workouts you hate—your metabolism is likely curled up in the fetal position, clutching a throw blanket, binge-watching trash TV, and ghosting your progress. Not broken… just burnt out.

A reverse diet is the slow, strategic way to bring your calories back up so your metabolism can function like it actually wants to help you again.

And no, it’s not a free-for-all.
It’s a calculated, gentle increase of about 50–100 calories every 1–2 weeks—starting with protein and veggies, and gradually adding back in those beloved carbs and healthy fats.

It’s like a spa day for your metabolism… but with snacks.

Why Should You Even Bother?

Let’s be real. If you’ve lived on rice cakes, “100-calorie packs,” and yogurt-for-breakfast since 2006, chances are… you don’t even know what “enough food” feels like.

Remember those contestants from that show “Biggest Loser” ? Six years later, they were still burning 500 fewer calories per day than before the show. That’s metabolic adaptation, and it’s real.

But here’s the good news:
Studies show that a proper reverse diet can boost your metabolic rate by up to 15% without turning you into the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Woman. Although your brain may try to make you feel that way.

And if you’re over 40? Reverse dieting is essential.
➡️ You’re losing muscle mass
➡️ Your hormones are shifting
➡️ Your metabolism is more reactive than ever

More food = more muscle = more metabolic mojo.
And let’s not forget: better sleep, a more stable mood, and the radical act of actually enjoying your damn life. Without the constant worry of “Am I doing this right?”

Okay, I’m In. How Do I Start?

Let’s break this down Fit Girl Magic style. Here’s how to actually do a reverse diet:

1. Find Your Starting Line

Track your food for a week—no shame, no judgment. You’ve gotta know where you are before you can make any power moves.

2. Add Slowly

Bump calories by 50–100 every 1–2 weeks. Start with protein and veggies. Then slowly invite carbs and fats to the party.

3. Ignore the Scale (Seriously)

Your weight may fluctuate a few pounds. That’s your body adjusting—not betraying you.
Instead, focus on:

Are you less cranky?

Are your cravings chill?

Are you sleeping like a rock?

Are you not “hangry” by 3pm?

That’s progress.

4. Train Like You Love Yourself

Strength train 3–4x per week.
Walk more.
And cardio? She’s the sidekick now, not the main character.

5. Ditch the Diet Mentality

Eating more doesn’t mean you’ve “fallen off.”
It means you’re done with restriction and ready to rebuild.
This isn’t weakness. It’s your comeback tour.

How Do You Know It’s Working?

Your weight stabilizes (within 3–5 pounds)

You sleep like a you haven’t in years

No more bingeing granola

You’re not white-knuckling through every afternoon by chugging water or brushing your teeth

You can enjoy a meal without guilt or thinking up a punishment workout

You’ll likely stay in reverse diet mode for 8–16 weeks depending on how long you’ve been in the diet trenches. If you’ve been stuck for years? Take your time.
This isn’t a 30-day crash plan. This is metabolic rehab.

And if you’re looking for fast weight loss and crash diets?
👋 I’m not your girl.
But if you’re ready to finally feel strong, energized, and actually at peace with food—pull up a chair.

Final Pep Talk: Your Metabolism Isn’t a Diva—It’s Just Tired

Your body isn’t fighting you.
It’s protecting you.

Let’s show it some love:
✅ Lift heavy
✅ Eat more
✅ Ditch the diet drama
✅ And start living like the strong, sexy, badass woman you are

Need Support?

✨ Take my free quiz: Is Your Metabolism Tired AF?
✨ Grab the Reverse Dieting Guide—it’s actually fun and NOT filled with bro science.
✨ Slide into my DMs or book a call—we’ll talk strategy, support, and snacks.

Because the season of sad Ziplock bag meals is over.
And this next season? It’s yours. 💜

This week’s Fit Girl Magic podcast we’re discussing the power of consistency in achieving your fitness goals. As women, it’s really easy to overcomplicate your pursuit of self-improvement, making it feel like a complicated mathematical equation. But the truth is, you don’t need to have all the elements to align perfectly before you start working towards our goals. It’s about consistent practice and progress, no matter how small.

In this episode, I take a closer look at the benefits of consistency, share success stories, and provide tips for staying on track.

Let’s face it we all have busy lives, and finding time for exercise can be challenging. However, the key to achieving our fitness goals is consistent practice. Improvement takes time and practice, and starting with simple steps can lead to remarkable progress over time. Let’s take the story of one of my clients, who works hard and juggles many responsibilities from home. She often feels like her “me-time” is limited, with work and dinner taking up most of her day. However, by committing to just 20 minutes of exercise at least three times a week, she has already seen a significant improvement in her energy levels and overall well-being.

Scaling back commitments is also essential to avoid burnout. It’s okay to say no to certain things and prioritize your health. Sometimes, this means sacrificing other commitments, but the payoff is always worth it. When it comes to fitness, remember that it’s a journey, and change and trade-offs are necessary to achieve our desired results.

Nutrition is another area where consistency is key. Diet culture has taught us that it was all about following strict food rules, which can leave you feeling guilty and deprived. However, by simplifying our approach to nutrition and being more mindful about our food choices, you can get healthier, more sustainable lifestyle. This was me! And one day I finally just got tired of the obsessing, the 2nd guessing and the micro-managing. I wanted to finally go on vacation and not lose my shit! I went on a 30-day trip and gave myself 3 actions and man that was such a game changer! By making small changes to my diet and being more mindful about my food choices, I was able to maintain a healthy weight without feeling deprived.

It’s crucial to make a mindset shift when it comes to consistency. Instead of fixating on reaching perfection, your focus should be on consistent practice and progress, no matter how small. Whether it’s going for a walk, practicing yoga, or lifting weights, doing something every day is better than doing nothing at all. Elizabeth Gilbert once said, “Whatever is practiced will improve,” and I truly believe that.

Finally, remember that consistency is not always easy, but it’s worth it. Find a support system, whether it’s a workout buddy or an accountability partner, and celebrate your successes, no matter how small. Remember, Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither are your fitness goals. But with consistent practice and progress, we can achieve our healthiest, happiest selves.

Consistency is the key to achieving our fitness goals, whether it’s in sports, nutrition, or your workouts. It’s important to remember that improvement takes time and practice, and starting with simple steps can lead to significant progress over time. When it comes to fitness, consistency is not always easy, but it’s worth it. By shifting into a mindset that focuses on consistent practice and progress, finding a support system, and celebrating our successes, you can achieve your healthiest, happiest selves. So, who’s ready to consistent practice and let the magic happen!

There is a stigma attached to the menopause in our society where it is viewed as more than a time when a woman is no longer fertile. It’s viewed as a sign she is growing old and less attractive than before. Add in the raging hormones, hot flashes, and mood swings and you have a life crisis waiting to erupt.

I recently talk to Jennifer Harrington of Menopause Natural Solution and she shed some light on the fact of menopause – the hows, whys, and need to know of how to do more than survive menopause. Jennifer shares how she teaches her clients to cope and thrive through the change.

I won’t deny, menopause mostly deserves its bad rap, ripe with frustration-inducing symptoms like hot flashes, brain fog, weight gain, and mood swings. But take this to heart: The change doesn’t have to be this big, awful thing you fear or must suffer through. Unlike other hormonally tumultuous times like puberty and pregnancy, you’ve actually got a lot more control over how you weather this one.

Jennifer explained the correlation between puberty and menopause during our conversation. Think back to when you were a teenager going through puberty. You veered from anger and despair to laughter and happiness on an almost hourly basis. My guess that if you’re here reading this blog, you’re not an adolescent. If you’re at that time of your life when your periods are becoming erratic and your sleep patterns change and you feel more anxious, depressed, angry or irritable than before, the odds are your more intense emotional state is connected to changes going on physically. Same — or similar — to adolescence, then. Only in our teens the floodgates of our reproductive hormones are being opened and, in the run up to menopause (known as ‘perimenopause’), they are closing.

Our brains actually begin to change at perimenopause. Like the rising heat in our bodies, our brains also become fired up! Sparked by the hormonal changes that are typical during the menopausal transition, a switch goes on that signals changes in our temporal lobes, the brain region associated with enhanced intuition. How this ultimately affects us depends to a large degree on how willing we are to make the changes in our lives that our hormones are urging us to make. This is why so many women no longer feel the need to hide their feelings or suppress their words as they approach 40 and beyond.

But there are many factors that contribute to the levels of effect the hormones have on you. Stress, toxins, internal health conditions, and the amount of sleep and exercise you get, all play roles in the way your body reacts during perimenopause. Here are 3 tips from Jennifer Harrington for dealing with life during menopause.

Let’s start with stress.

Reducing stress is crucial for easing up the frustration of hot flashes. Aanxiety and stress preceded hot flashes among perimenopausal and post-menopausal women. Your typical stress-coping strategies may need to be adjusted because of the high levels of stress that may be occurring as a result of physical changes during menopause.

Jennifer suggests adding exercise to your routine. Though it may seem counter-intuitive (I mean you’re already hot right’), over time the exercising can actually help reduce the hot flashes.

Check your environment.

Have you ever thought of going plastic-free’ If not, now’s a good time. When you heat up plastic, it leaches toxins into your food. Those toxins are stored in your bones. While this isn’t good for younger women, Jennifer explains that it’s more dangerous as you get older.

“Your body’s really smart because if it keeps toxins in your bloodstream, you’re going to die. Right'” Instead it says, ‘Let’s put it into storage.’ Using lead as an example, that loves to be stored in your bones. And it’s not really safe in your bones because it’s displacing calcium and making your bones brittle but it’s not going to kill you instantly. But when you go through perimenopause and menopause, your estrogen levels start to lower, your bone mass starts to decrease and — yes ladies — re-released into the bloodstream and can cause symptoms very similar to menopause.”

Jennifer goes on to explain why you should bring this up to your doctor. ” for me, it’s so important to have a look what your toxic load is. Because at this point in life, it’s going to be released. And fat cells are another area that we really like to store fat soluble toxins.”

So now’s the time to start removing toxins.

On gaining weight

While you’re talking to your doctors about possible toxins in your system, ask about having your thyroid and adrenal glands checked as well. Many women going through perimenopause and menopause worry about weight gain. While it can be frustrating, it doesn’t have to be an inevitability. And the cause may not be your hormones. Jennifer suggested asking your doctor to check your thyroid and adrenals as both can contribute to weight gain, especially under stressful conditions.

As you begin to navigate your way through permimenopause and beyond, remember that have more control than you think. Rather than being swept away for the force of nature that is coming your way, decide. Decide that you are going to understand your body, what is happening, your options, and most importantly the kind of magic you want to create at this point in your life.
