What’s the Big Deal About Ozempic? Here’s What GLP-1s Actually Do

Let’s be honest, if you even think about trying Ozempic, it feels like you need to prepare a TED Talk just to justify it.

If you’ve ever whispered the words “GLP-1” like you were confessing to a crime…
Or felt low-key judged by Sharon in your friend group for “taking the easy way out”…
You’re not alone.

This week on the podcast, I sat down with Dr. Meghan Garcia-Webb, a triple board-certified expert in obesity and internal medicine, to break down what these medications actually are, what they do, and why we need to stop shaming women for getting support.

Let’s get into it.

First Things First: What Are GLP-1 Medications?

GLP-1s (like Ozempic, Wegovy, and Zepbound) mimic a hormone your body already makes. But unlike the natural version, which lasts only a few minutes, these medications stay active longer and work in three big ways:

They slow down how fast food leaves your stomach
→ So you stay fuller, longer, and can actually feel fullness before you’re halfway through a bag of chips.

They shift how your brain regulates fat storage and burning
→ Making it easier to lose weight without obsessing over every macro.

They calm the “food noise”
→ You know that mental loop of: “What am I eating next? Should I eat that? Did I mess up? Maybe I’ll start over Monday…” Yeah. That.

For many women, especially in midlife, this isn’t about “cheating”, it’s about finally feeling like their brain and body are on the same team again.

“But Isn’t That Cheating?”

Here’s what Dr. Meghan had to say:

“There’s this idea that if you take medication, you’re doing it wrong… but that’s just someone else’s rulebook.”

Read that again.

We don’t shame people for taking blood pressure meds.
Or for needing reading glasses.
So why are we shaming women for using tools that support their health?

GLP-1s are just that, a tool. Not a moral failing. Not a shortcut. Not a cheat code.

What to Watch Out For

Now, don’t get it twisted, Dr. Meghan is not out here handing out shots like protein bars.

Here are her non-negotiables:

You need to be monitored by a real provider
Med spas and sketchy compounded versions? Hard no.

Know what you’re actually taking
“Peptide” has become a marketing buzzword. Ask questions. Get the real name. Be sure it’s legit.

The meds don’t replace habits
You still need protein, fiber, movement, sleep, and strength training. Always. Period.

Who Are These Meds Actually For?

According to Dr. Meghan:

Women with a BMI over 27 and a weight-related condition (like high blood pressure or PCOS)

Women with a BMI over 30

Women who’ve truly tried everything and feel mentally done

Women in midlife whose bodies feel like they’ve “stopped responding”

This isn’t about vanity. It’s about getting momentum. Feeling in control again. And yes, preventing future health issues.

Who Shouldn’t Use Them?

Dr. Meghan is clear:
If you don’t meet the criteria… if you’ve got untreated gut issues or a history of disordered eating… or if you’re not being properly monitored?
This isn’t the move.

And if you’re just looking for a “quick fix” without changing anything else?
The results won’t last. Period.

Bottom Line: It’s Time to Drop the Shame

If you’re considering GLP-1s, or already on them, and feel like you have to keep it quiet because people will think you “cheated”… this episode is your permission to let that crap go.

Taking care of your health isn’t something to whisper about.

Hey everyone, it’s Kim here, your trusty host of Fit Girl Magic! So, I had the fab Dr. Janese pop by our episode. Together, we dished out some real talk about weight loss, Ozempic and GLP-1 medications, and why it’s sooo important to get your habits and mindsets in check, because let’s face it, popping pills alone won’t magically shrink that waistline.

Dr. Janese was super clear these medications won’t do anything to alleviate the symptoms of menopause while GLP-1 is a hormone it has no impact on sex hormones, But hey, these drugs might just give a little nudge to that stubborn weight and get your metabolism humming.

Still, no Cinderella transformations here – it’s the long game we’re playing with these meds. She also emphasizes that you can’t forget about the holy trinity: healthy food, moving your body, and catching those Z’s! ‘Cause, you know, if your tank’s low on sleep, water, or your tummy’s all tied up in knots, don’t even think about eyeballing that scale for a happy number.

And let’s get real about those protein and fiber numbers – most women over 40 are barely hitting this number, it’s time to up your game. Dr. Janese and I also speak on everything from the magic (or not) of Ozempic and other glamorously named GLP-1 drugs.

We wrapped up our pow-wow with Janese reminding us that medications are like the cherry on a sundae – nice and all, but not the main event of your weight loss. What I loved most about this conversation is that Dr. Janese emphasized that the reason why you see Ozempic face, muscle loss is that for some users they are not adding in the nutrition basics adding in protein and fiber. While skimping on sleeping and not managing their stress.
