Is It Belly Fat or Inflammation? What Women Over 40 Need to Know

If you’ve been feeling puffy, bloated, achy, or stuck with stubborn belly fat that won’t budge, you might be asking yourself: “What is happening to my body?” For many women over 40, the answer isn’t another diet or a harder workout—it’s inflammation.

What Is Inflammation?

Inflammation is your body’s natural defense system. When you cut your leg or fight off a cold, the body launches an inflammatory response to heal and protect you. But in today’s world, our bodies are on constant high alert—exposed to stress, processed foods, chemicals, and lack of sleep. Instead of occasional healing, inflammation becomes chronic, acting like a slow-burning house fire inside your body.

Dr. Shivani Gupta, inflammation expert and Ayurvedic practitioner, describes it perfectly:

“It’s like putting a smoldering candle in the attic. You don’t notice it at first…until one day the entire house is on fire.”

That hidden fire shows up as brain fog, joint pain, fatigue, stubborn belly fat, bloating, and feeling like you just don’t recognize yourself anymore.

Signs It Might Be Inflammation (Not Just Weight Gain)
Puffiness in the face or around the middle
Belly fat that doesn’t respond to workouts or dieting
Brain fog or forgetfulness
Achy joints or unexplained fatigue
Blood markers like cholesterol, A1C, or HSCRP creeping up

If this sounds familiar, the problem may not be lack of discipline. It may be chronic inflammation weighing you down.

Why Women Over 40 Are More Vulnerable

Between perimenopause, hormone shifts, stress, and the pressure to “do it all,” midlife women are especially vulnerable to inflammation. Add in nutrient-poor diets, poor sleep, and the constant comparison trap of social media, and our bodies are left begging for calm instead of chaos.

As Dr. Gupta says:

“We’re trying to live ten different women’s amazing lives in one body, in one lifetime—and it’s fueling chaos instead of peace.”

3 Simple Habits to Calm Inflammation

The good news? Reducing inflammation doesn’t mean overhauling your life. Start with these small but powerful daily shifts:

Prioritize Sleep – Going to bed by 10 PM helps your body repair, detox, and reset.

Add Turmeric – A proven anti-inflammatory spice that supports gut health and reduces oxidative stress.

Pause + Reduce Stress – Even a mindful tea break or chewing your meals slowly can pull your body out of fight-or-flight mode.

These simple practices can help your body finally cool the fire and get back to balance.

The Role of Gut Health and Ayurveda

Ayurveda, the 5,000-year-old system of medicine, teaches that gut health is the foundation of overall health. When your digestive “fire” is strong, your body can process foods, toxins, and stress more effectively. Supporting your gut with nutrient-dense foods, mindful eating, and seasonal rhythms can transform how you feel day to day.

Final Thoughts

If you’ve been doubling down on diets and workouts without results, it’s time to consider inflammation as the missing piece. Your body isn’t broken—it’s sending you signals that it’s overwhelmed. By focusing on sleep, stress, and gut health, you can put out that hidden house fire and finally feel like yourself again.

Your Turn: What’s one small habit you could add this week to calm inflammation—better sleep, mindful meals, or stress reduction? Share it in the comments!

Let’s talk about the elephant in the room: hormone therapy.

So many women in perimenopause or menopause are shelling out cash for HRT (hormone replacement therapy), convinced it’s going to be the thing that finally helps them feel like themselves again. And when it doesn’t? They’re left feeling frustrated, confused, and like their body is broken.

Here’s the truth most people won’t tell you:

Hormones don’t operate in isolation.
Estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone may get all the airtime, but they’re only part of the picture. Hormones work in a complex hierarchy—like a web. And if you tug on one without checking the rest, you risk throwing your whole system off.

This is where a lot of women go wrong.

They start HRT or hop on the latest GLP-1 medication hoping for instant magic—but feel worse or no different. Why? Because the upstream issues haven’t been addressed.

Think of it like revving the engine of a car with no gas, low oil, and a clogged filter. It doesn’t matter how shiny the parts are—it’s not going anywhere.

Here’s What You Need to Know First:

1. Hormones Are a Web, Not a Solo Act
Adding one hormone affects all of them. You can’t support insulin or glucagon without also influencing cortisol, estrogen, thyroid hormones, and more. If your system is inflamed or stressed out, the body won’t respond the way you want it to.

2. Address the Foundation First
Sleep, blood sugar, nutrition, stress, inflammation—those are the pillars. If you skip over these and jump straight to hormone therapy, it’s like putting new tires on a car that doesn’t have an engine.

3. There’s No Silver Bullet
This part is hard to hear, but real talk: the long way is the shortcut. I get it—everyone wants the fast fix. But lasting change takes time, strategy, and a full-body approach. You don’t need another hack—you need a plan that starts with the basics.

So What Can You Do?

Before you jump into HRT or any kind of hormone support, ask yourself:

Am I sleeping consistently?

Have I managed my blood sugar and insulin resistance?

What’s my stress level really like?

Am I moving my body in a way that supports—not drains—me?

Once these are dialed in, then hormone therapy can actually work the way it’s supposed to.

Final Thoughts:

If you’re feeling preyed upon by quick fixes, influencers, or supplement pushers—you’re not alone. Perimenopausal and menopausal women have been gaslit for decades. My mission is to help you become an informed, empowered consumer who knows how to support her body from the inside out.

You’re not broken. You’re just missing the roadmap.

Need help figuring out where to start?
Leave a comment below

You’re not lazy. You’re just done grinding.

Let’s be honest, you’ve tried the 5 AM boot camps, the meal plans that require a PhD in food science, and the workout schedules that make NASA missions look relaxed. You’ve hustled hard, pushed through exhaustion, and white-knuckled your way through more “transformations” than you can count.

And now? You’re tired. Bone-deep, soul-level tired of making your health feel like a second job.

The Hustle Culture Hangover is Real

Here’s what nobody talks about: You’ve outgrown the “go hard or go home” era. And that’s actually a good thing.

Your 20-something self could survive on four hours of sleep, protein bars, and pure determination. Your current self? She needs actual meals, reasonable bedtimes, and routines that don’t require a personal assistant to maintain.

This isn’t weakness. This is wisdom.

Why Slowing Down Feels Like Giving Up (But Isn’t)

When you’ve been conditioned to believe that results only come from suffering, a gentler approach feels wrong. Like you’re not trying hard enough. Like you’re making excuses.

But here’s the plot twist: The women who maintain their results long-term? They’re not the ones still grinding. They’re the ones who found a pace they could actually sustain.

They’re not doing two-hour workouts. They’re taking walks and doing 20-minute strength sessions. They’re not eliminating food groups. They’re eating protein with every meal and calling it a win.

The Nervous System Reset You Actually Need

Want to know the real secret to lasting weight loss after 40? It’s not another workout. It’s learning to calm the hell down.

Your body has been in fight-or-flight mode for years. Between work stress, family demands, and the constant pressure to “optimize” everything, your nervous system is fried. And a fried nervous system holds onto belly fat like its life depends on it.

Try this today: Take 5 minutes with no phone, no noise, no agenda. Just sit. Just breathe. Just be.

I know it sounds too simple. But your body doesn’t need another challenge. It needs permission to relax.

What Sustainable Actually Looks Like

Sustainable isn’t sexy. It doesn’t come with before-and-after photos or dramatic testimonials. It looks like:

Walking instead of running when your knees hurt

Having Greek yogurt for breakfast instead of skipping it all together

Going to bed at [9:30] because you’re tired, vs grinding to get something done

Saying no to plans that don’t serve you

Eating the birthday cake and getting back to your routine the next day or heck the next hour

This isn’t settling. This is succeeding.

The Momentum That Doesn’t Require Motivation

Here’s what changes everything: Stop waiting for motivation to strike. Start building systems that work even when you don’t feel like it.

Motivation is a fair-weather friend. It shows up when things are going well and disappears the second life gets complicated. But systems? Systems work whether you’re feeling it or not.

Keep protein bars in your car

Set out your workout clothes the night before

Schedule your walks like important meetings

Prep snacks when you have energy, so they’re ready when you don’t

You’re Not Behind — You’re Right on Time

That voice in your head saying you should be further along by now? That you’re falling behind? That’s not truth talking — that’s comparison and old programming.

Your timeline is your timeline. The woman who loses 50 pounds in 6 months isn’t better than the woman who loses 20 pounds in a year and keeps it off. Different journeys, different victories.

The Permission You’ve Been Waiting For

Here it is: You have permission to take the pressure off. To stop making your health another source of stress. To find a rhythm that feels good instead of one that looks good on paper.

You have permission to be gentle with yourself while still moving forward. To prioritize sleep over early morning workouts. To choose consistency over intensity.

Ready to create momentum without burning out?

Scrolling through Instagram can be tough when you're comparing your real life to everyone's highlight reels. Remember, those influencers aren't sharing their struggles. Focus on your progress, however small, and celebrate it. You’re on your own journey, so run at your own pace and appreciate the wins only you can see.

Ever scroll Instagram and think, “Why is this so easy for her?”

You know the drill. You’re feeling pretty good about your morning walk and hitting your protein goal. Then you open social media and BAM — someone’s posting six-pack selfies while literally eating a donut.

Cue the spiral of doom.

The Sneaky Truth About Comparison

Here’s what’s really happening: You’re comparing your behind-the-scenes to someone else’s highlight reel.

That gorgeous fitness influencer? She’s not posting about the bloated days, the hormone struggles, or the fact that she took 47 photos to get that one “effortless” shot.

Meanwhile, you’re over here judging your entire journey based on one moment of someone else’s carefully curated life.

Or that friend who’s been the same size since high school and thinks perimenopause is a type of pasta sauce. WTF!

Why Your Brain Loves This Torture

Your brain thinks it’s being helpful by comparing. It’s like, “Hey, look what’s possible!” But here’s the plot twist: If comparison keeps you stuck instead of motivated, it’s actually sabotaging your progress.

Because when you’re busy feeling bad about what you’re not doing, you stop celebrating what you ARE doing. And those small wins? They’re literally the foundation of lasting change.

Social Media vs. Reality Check

Let’s get real about what you’re actually seeing online:

Perfect lighting and angles (because nobody posts their double-chin selfies)

Specific moments in time (not the full story)

Different bodies, genetics, and life circumstances

Often, people who are paid to look a certain way

Meanwhile, you’re living real life — with kids, jobs, stress, hormones, and a million other things that don’t fit in a neat Instagram square.

The Simple Mindset Switch That Changes Everything

Next time you catch yourself in comparison quicksand, try this: Write down 3 things you’re doing better today than yesterday.

Maybe you:

Added protein to your meals

Took a 10 minute walk

Drank an extra glass of water

Got 7 hours of sleep instead of 5

Tiny? Yes. Insignificant? Absolutely not. These small wins stack up faster than you think.

Your Journey Doesn’t Need an Audience

Here’s something nobody talks about: You don’t need to document every workout or meal to make progress. You don’t need before-and-after photos or transformation posts.

You just need to show up for yourself, consistently, in ways that actually work for your life.

Some days that looks like a 45-minute workout. Other days it’s choosing to walk instead of stress eating. Both count. Both matter.

Stop Running Someone Else’s Race

The woman posting the six-pack selfie? She’s running her race. You? You’re running yours. Different tracks, different finish lines, different victories along the way.

Your only job is to be better than you were yesterday. Not better than her, not better than some impossible standard — just better than yesterday’s version of you.

Ready to stop the comparison spiral and start owning your progress?

👉 Day 3 of my 5-Day Belly Fat Reset podcast is your mindset reset. We’re talking about how to celebrate your wins, ignore the noise, and actually enjoy the journey instead of constantly judging it.

You deserve to feel proud of how far you’ve come, not stuck on how far you think you have to go.

P.S. — The best transformation photos are the ones only you can see: how you feel in your body, your energy levels, your confidence. Those don’t need a filter.

The Great Midlife Body Plot Twist

Here’s what nobody warns you about: Your body doesn’t send a memo before it changes the rules.

One minute you’re cruising along with the same habits that always worked. The next, you’re googling “why do I look pregnant but I’m definitely not” at 2 AM while stress-eating pita chips.

Welcome to the wild world of hormonal chaos, where your body decides to store fat in places it never bothered with before.

It’s Not Your Fault (But It Is Your Problem)

Let’s get one thing straight: This isn’t because you got lazy or lost willpower. Your hormones are literally rewiring your metabolism like a toddler with a screwdriver.

Estrogen starts ghosting you. Cortisol moves in and makes itself way too comfortable. Insulin gets moody and stops doing its job properly. Meanwhile, your metabolism is like, “You know what? I think I’ll just… slow down. A lot.”

The result? Your body starts hoarding fat around your middle like it’s preparing for the apocalypse.

Why Your Body’s Actually Trying to Help (Plot Twist!)

Here’s the mind-bender: Your body isn’t betraying you — it’s trying to protect you. In your mind you are like, I don’t need this kind of protection!

When hormones go haywire, your smart little system thinks, “Something’s wrong! Better store some emergency fuel!” So it parks extra fat right around your organs, just in case.

Sweet of it, really. Completely annoying, but sweet.

The Simple Evening Ritual That Changes Everything

Want to send your body a different message? Try this tonight: Take a 10-20 minute walk after any meal today.

I know, I know. It sounds almost too simple. But here’s what happens:

Your blood sugar stabilizes (no more fat storage signals)

Cortisol starts to chill out

Your body gets the memo that everything’s actually fine

It’s like a gentle conversation with your metabolism instead of a shouting match.

The Real Story Behind Your Stubborn Belly Fat

Look, you deserve to understand what’s actually happening in your body. Not some vague “hormones are crazy” explanation, but the real deal about why this is happening now and what actually works to fix it.

Ready for the full story?

👉 I break down exactly what triggers midlife belly fat in Day 2 of my free 5-Day Belly Fat Reset podcast. We’re talking about the specific hormones, the timing, and most importantly — what you can actually do about it.

Have a listen, because once you understand what’s really going on, everything starts to make sense.

As I read Day 13 of Make Cause Miracles this one was like a gut punch. It asked. What are my ego’s beliefs about my body?

Whew. This one hit me hard today.

My ego tells me: “No one will work with you because you have belly fat.”

WTF Is Happening to My Body? (And Why You’re Not Alone)

Yep, the mean girl in my head still gets loud some days. I’ll catch myself standing in front of the mirror thinking, “What the actual F is going on with my body?!”

There’s shame. There’s judgment. And this belief that my body has to look a certain way for anyone to trust me to believe that I know what I’m talking about when it comes to weight loss, fitness, or health.

That my worth as a coach somehow hinges on how me having 6 pack abs.

Yes, I know it’s BS, but some days, my inner mean girl comes in HOT. And today’s journaling prompt from May Cause Miracles cracked it wide open.

But here’s the thing those thoughts don’t drain my energy. They fuel it.

If anything, when I hear that voice? It makes me want to figure this out. For me. For you. For every woman standing in front of her mirror wondering the same damn thing: “Why isn’t this working anymore?”

It’s not a sign to give up. It’s a sign to get curious.

I know I’m not alone in this. I hear it every day:
“Why doesn’t what used to work… work anymore?”
“What am I doing wrong?”
“Do I need to do more? Less? Different?”

I’ve asked myself those same questions. For years, my reflex was always: “Go harder.” More workouts. Less food. More restriction. More pushing.

And when it didn’t work? I’d think maybe this is just how it is now.

But that’s not the truth.
Just because something hasn’t worked yet… doesn’t mean nothing will.

The Truth About Belly Fat After 40 (It’s Not What You Think)

Your body isn’t broken. It’s different. It needs a different strategy. One that works with your body — not against it.

That’s where I am now. Leaning into giving myself time. Trying new things. Ditching the old “go harder” mentality and instead asking: “What does my body actually need today?”

Because if I can crack this code? You can too.

And if you’ve been looking in the mirror thinking WTF is happening?! I recorded a free podcast just for you: 5 Ways to Crack the Belly Fat Code.

You’ll walk away knowing where to start — no more guessing, no more harder-and-harder. Just smarter.

Go listen now, comment below or shot me an email. I’d love to hear what lands for you.
