Who taught us that it only counts if it all gets done?

Somewhere along the way, most of us got the same memo: track everything, never miss a workout, meal prep in the tiny plastic containers, get up at 5am. And if you miss one step? Start over Monday.

We accepted it the way we accept an app update’s terms of agreement — no idea what the fine print says, just check the box and get back to Netflix. Health came with an all-or-nothing contract, and nobody read it.

I Lived the Contract at the Highest Level

Back in my fitness competition days, I was the poster child for all-or-nothing. January 1st: on the wagon. Meal prep, cardio, everything tracked and measured within an inch of my life. Then my last show would end in June and I’d swing to the complete opposite extreme, because I’d sacrificed for six months and I’d “earned it.”

Restriction or chaos. Far right or far left. There was no middle, because I thought middle meant weak.

What I actually was? Exhausted. Either white-knuckling 5am gym sessions or waking up bloated and hungover, promising myself I’d “really, really, really” get to the gym today.

The Challenge Didn’t Fail You

When I stopped competing, I watched my clients run the same pattern with 30-day and 75-day challenges. They’d crush it, and then day 31 would arrive. A vacation. A sick kid. A work trip with no gym. And everything would unravel.

Not because they failed. Because the challenge was never designed for their life. The life where you were up late with your kid and can’t make the 6am class. The life with actual travel, actual summers, actual people in it.

So maybe we’ve been asking the wrong question. Not “how much can I do?” but “what can I actually keep doing?” Not what you can gut through for day 30 — what’s still standing on day 300.

The Two Summer Camps

Every year, I watch women pick a camp:

Camp One: “Summer’s busy. I’ll get back on track in September.” Kids home, vacations, cookouts, health goes on the shelf until Labor Day.

Camp Two: “July has to look exactly like February.” Same workouts, same schedule, same expectations. And when life inevitably gets in the way, it becomes your personal failing — because somewhere along the way, adjusting the plan started feeling like quitting the plan.

One says screw it. One says don’t change a damn thing. Neither works, and most of us bounce between the two.

My Bruce Lee Moment

Bruce Lee didn’t become Bruce Lee by following one martial arts style. He studied several, kept what worked, and dropped the rest.

Meanwhile, we do the opposite with our health. I’m keto, so I have to check every keto box. I’m vegan, paleo, whatever-the-bleep — and if I’m not checking every box, what am I even doing?

What if you treated the rules like a buffet instead? You don’t eat everything on the line. You take the chicken that looks good and you move on.

Enter: Feet Up Summer

That’s exactly what Feet Up Summer is 26 opportunities to experiment with healthy experiments, one a day, starting on the first day of summer.

Why 26? It’s 2026. That’s it. No big philosophy, just an experiment. (Tip of the hat to Gretchen Rubin, who sets her yearly habits by the year.)

Some experiments are about food. Some are movement. Some are rest, because some of you don’t know how to sit down. Some are connection, and some are fun. (Fun is not cleaning out your pantry. Sorry.)

If an experiment resonates, try it. If it doesn’t, skip it and come back tomorrow. There’s no catching up, no guilt, no gold stars for collecting all 26. I had a bookshelf full of diet books once, collecting isn’t keeping. The win is finding the one, three, or five habits that make your life noticeably better and actually stick around past Labor Day.

It’s a menu of options, not a mandate.

The Real Reason You Keep Starting Over

It’s not that you lack discipline. It’s that you keep trying to maintain habits that were never built for your life, or for this season of it. If you’re forcing your July to look like your February, of course it feels like a struggle.

What if nothing is wrong with you? What if you don’t need another plan, you just need a way to blend health into your actual life, instead of treating it like an invisible ladder you’re forever climbing?

This summer should be beach days, vacations, and cookouts, without the mental gymnastics.

Ready to take what you need and leave the rest? Join Feet Up Summer here — Week One lands in your inbox Friday, June 19, and we officially kick off June 21. Or join the Fit Girl Magic Facebook group for daily experiment drops, encouragement, and yes, merit badges for grown-ass women.

When you think of the beach do you shutter thinking I’m not ready!

Each morning when you get out of the shower and glance at yourself in the mirror and think is this the year I dust off my bikini’

Is this the year that I don’t need to wear a t-shirt and shorts over my bathing suit.

Maybe if I close my eyes and click my heels together 3 times, I’ll look like a Sports Illustrated Swimsuit model.

Sorry, ladies, I’ve tried this and it doesn’t work, when you finally open your eyes, you’re still you. Here are some tips that will help get and keep a bikini body.

Instead of rushing out and buying your dream bathing suit, tape a picture of it on your bathroom mirror and/or refrigerator to help keep you motivated to eat healthier and to get moving.

Face it, bathing suit 👙 shopping is stressful and can be de-motivating, wait until you feel good about yourself and your hard work before you hit the stores. Who knows maybe by then it will be on sale!

Achieving your new summer body isn’t about starvation. It’s about making healthy choices. I love and live by the 80/20 rule. If 80% of ALL your meals are compiled of healthy choices, you are eating every few hours, and exercising then you can have a few pleasures to keep you from going off the dead end.

💦 Drink your water. It helps cleanse your body of harmful toxins and by not taking in enough water, it can make losing weight hard and cause cellulite to appear more dimply. Water is crucial to living a healthy lifestyle and keeps your body working in proper order.

I know it doesn’t make sense but when you eat frequently you will increase your metabolism. When deciding what to add to your new eating plan, consider adding more fruits, vegetables, lean meat, fish and dairy.

You’ll also want to avoid highly processed foods because they remove many of the nutrients your body needs just leaving you with empty calories and fat.

🚫 Don’t believe the hype! The information on the front of the food packages may be misleading, make sure that you read the back of the box, and read the ingredients.

If it has more than 5 ingredients or you need a PhD in biology to understand what’s inside, leave it on the shelf.

🍫 Limit the sweets/junkfood. These foods contain empty calories and will only add on the pounds, sabotaging your efforts to lose weight and get bathing suit ready. If you must have something sweet, try having some fruit. Craving salt’ Try reaching for a pickle.

Want to lose belly fat’ Get some sleep. 💤 The average adult needs 7-9 hours of sleep, how much are you getting’ Without proper rest, the body can’t repair itself and when your body lacks sleep you more likely to reach for junk food to give you a quick rush of energy.

Keep your stress levels in check. Increased stress levels can lead to increased levels of cortisol in your system. This hormone is your enemy if you want to lose belly fat and increase muscle. When we have too much of this hormone in our blood stream it causes or body to store fat around belly, decrease muscle building and reduce our immune system.

Remember there are no quick fixes to weight loss. Cher once said, “If the perfect body came in a bottle everyone would have one.” To get bikini ready, start by choosing a healthy lifestyle that includes good food choices, exercise and a good night sleep.

these are the types of things I will be talking about in my up coming summer school program. If you are interested in learning more click here.

We are just 4 weeks from spring, thank goodness, it’s been a long hard winter. That also means that summer will be fast approaching. It’s 17 weeks away, but hey who’s counting.

Do you hear the call of your swimsuit’ How are you feeling about putting one on’ Will you be ready for that first day at the beach, or do you have a spring vacation planned and that day is coming sooner than you would like. TV infomercials and magazine ads all promise you that if you use their product(s) you’ll lose the most weight in the shortest amount of time.

Let me tell you, these “lose weight fast and easy” schemes don’t work. These weight loss systems may help people drop some pounds, but fast weight loss results are mostly water weight loss, and water weight can be regained just as fast as it’s lost. If you want to be ready to bust out your bathing suit this summer, don’t invest in fast fixes.

Here are some of the more typical schemes that have been touting fast weight loss to everyone who wants to look great in their swimsuit.

Spot reducing – There is no such thing as spot reducing. Our bodies are smarter than we think, if we want to lose weight in our thighs, by just working your thighs you won’t lose the weight there and only there. You can’t attach something to your belly to lose belly fat. Sorry folks any exercise program or product that tells you their product can do that is not being truthful with you.

Fad diets – Sticking with eating just one food or doing a cleanse isn’t nutritionally sound and can make you sick. Any diet that asks you to cut calories to a dangerous level less than 1200 calories/day is starvation. When your body goes into “starvation mode,” it holds onto fat, not knowing when the next meal will come. That can sabotage all of your efforts weight loss efforts. I know it sounds counter intuitive but you need to eat to fuel your weight loss.

Liquid nutrition – These diets are popular because they are widely available, inexpensive and effective with initial weight loss, which is typically water weight. Liquid diets tend to over use lean muscle and slow your metabolism, thus, making it even more difficult for weight loss to be maintained post diet. Eventually, liquid diets can lead to the development of muscle cramps, anemia, dizziness, menstrual abnormality, and constipation. Substituting healthy meals with shakes will not help you lose weight and it may cause you to overeat because you will remain hungry because you won’t feel satiated Healthy eating habits will provide your body with the vitamins and minerals you need without added calories.

You want your body to be the best it can, right’ We have 17 weeks to get ready to show off our bikini body. If you exercise and eat healthy, you’ll achieve your goal in time for bathing suit season. All the magic potions and weight loss schemes in the world won’t get you where you want to go any faster. Those fast fixes are not really fixes at all when you inevitably end up in worse condition than you started in.
