Let’s kick this off with a very relatable moment:
You sneeze.
You brace.
You cross your legs like you’re trying to hold in state secrets.
And then you think, “Is this just what being over 40 is now?”
Spoiler: Nope. Hard nope.
Your pelvic floor isn’t aging out… it’s waving a tiny white flag because it’s doing the MOST with the least support.
And thanks to my conversation with pelvic floor expert Christina Walsh, co-founder of Tighten Your Tinkler, I’m about to break down everything your doctor didn’t tell you.
Christina explained it perfectly.
It’s not some mysterious “thing” hiding somewhere in your body.
It’s literally a group of muscles — a sling — holding up your organs and helping you with the 3 big jobs:
✨ Peeing
✨ Pooping
✨ Penetration
Yep, the “3 Ps.”
That’s your pelvic floor’s résumé.
If that area is tired, tight, or overworked?
Your whole body is going to start sending weird signals:
back tightness, hip pain, leaking, urgency, painful sex, never feeling fully “empty” after going to the bathroom… the list goes on.
And here’s the kicker:
You do NOT need to have had a baby for things to feel off.
Life counts. Stress counts. Hormone shifts count. Tight leggings count.
Your pelvis is basically the narrator of your entire life story.
Most women think pelvic floor issues mean things are “loose.”
But for so many midlife women, the opposite is true — the pelvic floor is too tight.
Hypertonic. Grippy.
A control freak muscle doing the most.
That’s why Kegels aren’t always the answer.
(Actually, sometimes they make things worse. Yeah. Let that land.)
And those super tight leggings you wear to the gym?
If they’re leaving an indent at the end of the day…
That pressure doesn’t just disappear. It goes down.
Straight onto the pelvic floor.
Suddenly that “I have to pee again already?!” urgency makes a whole lot more sense.
Here’s where Christina blew my mind — the solutions are simple, gentle, and honestly kind of genius.
No pushing. No straining like you’re trying to win an Olympic event.
Just exhale and let your body do its thing.
If you’re not sure you fully emptied, rock a little.
Forward, back, side-to-side, tiny circles.
It opens the pathway and helps everything release.
A low hum relaxes your pelvic floor because your diaphragms work together.
Yes, humming on the toilet is a thing.
Yes, it works.
This one is iconic for a reason.
It puts your body in the position nature intended — taking pressure off your pelvic floor every single time you go.
Your pelvic floor is not impressed by your too-tight midsection.
Give that area actual breathing room.
These sound tiny… but they change EVERYTHING.
Christina said women usually wait for the “breaking point” moment:
“I sneezed at the beach in a swimsuit and yeah… that was it.”
“I had to start keeping extra underwear in my purse.”
“Sex started to hurt and I couldn’t ignore it anymore.”
But here’s the truth: you don’t need to wait for rock bottom.
Pelvic floor issues rarely fix themselves — especially after 40 when hormones shift.
The sooner you start supporting that area, the faster things improve.
Nothing about this is embarrassing.
Nothing about this is “normal aging.”
And absolutely nothing about this is your fault.
Your pelvic floor is part of your core, your hips, your breath, your whole body.
When you support it, EVERYTHING starts feeling better.
Confidence. Sleep. Sex. Movement.
All of it.
