The Truth About Supplements for Women Over 40: The Vital Five You Actually Need

Let’s be honest the supplement aisle is overwhelming. Rows of shiny bottles screaming energy, fat loss, detox, glow-up! It’s enough to make anyone want to run for the wine aisle instead.

So I brought in someone who’s been around supplements literally his whole life, Jared St. Clair, herbalist, supplement expert, and host of Vitality Radio.

He’s the guy who can spot a scam from a mile away and knows what actually works for your body.
And together, we broke it down to the essentials — what Jared calls The Vital Five.

Magnesium — The Calm-Down Mineral

If your sleep is garbage, your stress is high, or your muscles feel tight all the time, you probably need magnesium. Jared says most people are deficient, and honestly, it shows, from restless nights to mood swings to feeling “on edge” for no reason.

Magnesium helps with:

Relaxing muscles (and your mind)

Supporting energy production

Keeping digestion moving

Improving sleep quality

Pro tip: Look for magnesium glycinate or malate, not the cheap oxide form that just sends you sprinting to the bathroom.

A Quality Multivitamin — Not the Grocery Store Junk

Centrum? Flintstones? Yeah, no. Jared didn’t mince words: most commercial multis are underdosed, use synthetic ingredients, and barely absorb. You want one that contains methylated B vitamins, bioavailable minerals, and is third-party tested for purity.

Think of it as your nutritional safety net covering what your diet might miss on busy days (aka, every day).

Omega-3s — The Anti-Inflammation Hero

Fish oil isn’t just for heart health — it’s for brain, mood, and hormone support too.
But quality matters. If your fish oil smells like a fishing boat or gives you fishy burps… toss it. It’s rancid.

A high-quality omega-3 helps reduce inflammation, supports your joints, balances hormones, and even improves focus. And if you’re not into fish oil, look for algae-based omega-3s instead. Same benefits, no aftertaste.

Probiotics — Gut Health Is Everything

Your gut isn’t just about digestion — it affects your hormones, immune system, mood, and even your energy. Jared recommends spore-based probiotics (like Bacillus coagulans or Bacillus subtilis). They actually survive your stomach acid and make it to your gut — unlike many cheap ones that die before they even get there.

The goal isn’t to take probiotics forever; it’s to rebuild balance so your gut can do its job.

Digestive Enzymes — The Unsung Hero

This one doesn’t get enough love, and it’s one of Jared’s personal favorites.

He explains it like this: “Digestive enzymes take your food apart and break it into the nutrient pieces your body recognizes and can actually use.”

Your digestive system, teeth, stomach acid, bile, and enzymes, all work together to break food down.
But as we age, enzyme production drops.

That’s why so many people over 30 start to notice bloating, gassiness, indigestion, or fatigue after eating.

Jared’s advice: “Start with one good-quality enzyme capsule at each meal. Within a week, 95% of people will feel better — more energy, less bloating, and better digestion.”

Because it’s not just what you eat. It’s what your body can absorb.

Bonus Round

A few honorable mentions made the list too:

Vitamin D3 — If you live somewhere that isn’t sunny year-round, this one’s key for immune and bone health.

Collagen or Bone Broth Protein — Helps support joints, skin, and gut health.

Adaptogens (like Ashwagandha) — Great if you’re chronically stressed and feel like your cortisol is running the show. Another great product option

The Bottom Line

You don’t need a cabinet full of bottles or a PhD in label reading to feel better.
Start with The Vital Five, focus on quality over quantity, and give your body what it actually needs — not what TikTok is selling.

Because when your digestion works, your stress drops, and your energy returns…
that’s when you stop surviving and start feeling vital again.

You ever have one of those weeks where you swear, this is it—this is the week you get back on track… and then life walks in like it owns the place before your coffee even cools?

Yeah, same.

One of my clients recently came to me and said, “Kim, I’m ready to stop obsessing. I’m done with the cutting, the restricting—I just want to feel good in my body.” And I was like: been there, got the t-shirt, burned it, and built a better one.

We created a plan. We worked on food quality, increased her calories, and focused on building trust—with her body and with food. Three weeks in, she was rocking it. But then… one off week, and she spiraled.

“I missed some protein, my steps were low, I didn’t love what I was eating… maybe maintenance isn’t for me.”

Whoa. Sound familiar?

You Don’t Need Perfect. You Need Peace.

Most of us were raised on the idea that if we don’t nail it immediately, we’ve failed. We’re wired to think that if every box isn’t checked, the whole thing is trash. But real talk? That thinking is what’s actually keeping you stuck.

You’ve been taught to believe there’s only one “right” way:

The exact steps

The strict menu

The all-or-nothing blueprint

But that’s not life. That’s a Pinterest board.

So What Do You Actually Need?

Another plan?
Another challenge?
Another set of macros to obsess over?

Nah.

The average woman over 40 has tried 16 diets in her lifetime. SIXTEEN. So if another plan was the solution, it would’ve worked by now, right?

What you probably really need is:

Freedom to live without food rules running your brain

Flexibility to adjust with your season of life

Someone in your corner when you’re about to spiral and just want the bagel (no judgment)

For me, I needed a routine that flexed with my life. Not a free-for-all, but not a straightjacket either. Just something that let me live between a 5 and a 7 on the restriction scale. Not white-knuckling, but not face-first in the pantry either.

You’re Not Inconsistent—Your Strategy Is.

So many of my clients say, “I just can’t get back to what I was doing before.”
And to that, I say… good. Maybe what you were doing before doesn’t work anymore. Maybe it never actually worked—it just felt “successful” because it checked all the boxes.

The truth? We have seasons.
Some seasons are go-go-go, others are slow and steady.
Success isn’t doing all the things, all the time. It’s choosing the right things, for right now.

Drop the Perfection. Pick the Pace.

I used to believe that if I didn’t work out five times a week, I’d failed. Now? I’m okay with three. Heck, some weeks that’s a win. Because it’s not about being perfect—it’s about making peace with your pace.

And that mindset didn’t magically appear. It took time. Years, in fact. I had to unlearn the perfection programming that told me anything less than 100% was worthless.

But here’s the shift: when you stop micromanaging every bite, every step, every move… you start showing up from a place of self-respect, not self-control.

Ready for Support That Actually Fits You?

What if the problem isn’t that you “fell off”—but that you’ve simply outgrown your old plan?

Your body’s different.
Your time is different.
Your priorities? Also different.

So what if your support system reflected that?

I’m building something new—something that flexes with your life instead of fighting against it. But I’m not guessing what you need. I want you to tell me.

💬 Drop a comment with the word “FLOW” and I’ll send you a short, zero-pressure survey. It’s quick, anonymous if you want it to be, and if you leave your email, I might just send you a free coffee on me (because queens need fuel).

Let’s co-create something that doesn’t ask you to be perfect—just real.

Your body isn’t broken.
She’s just tired of being ignored.

Hey there, Fit Girl Magic listeners! Today, I’m diving deep into the ups and downs of menopause and how it can be a transformative, sometimes challenging, phase in a woman’s life. Join me as I explore the essential nutrition and exercise changes that can help you fight stubborn weight gain and manage hot flashes during this time. It’s time to allow to thrive through menopause!

The Power of Protein and Fiber:
Menopause brings about significant changes in our bodies, and it’s crucial to adapt our nutrition to support these changes. One key adjustment is adding protein and fiber to our diet. Protein helps maintain muscle mass, which tends to decline as we age. Incorporating strength training into our exercise routine is particularly vital for women over 35. Fiber, on the other hand, aids in digestion and elimination of toxins and excess estrogens. Both protein and fiber contribute to feelings of satiety and help control snacking.

Rethinking Calorie Consumption:
During menopause, it’s time to shift our focus from simply eating less to eating until you’re satisfied. Our bodies need nourishment and energy to function optimally. Instead of depriving yourself of carbs, it’s crucial to include them in your diet, especially if you’re engaged in strength training. Carbs serve as fuel for your body and brain, providing essential energy to keep you going. A balanced approach, prioritizing protein, vegetables, good fats, and then carbohydrates, will help stabilize energy levels and control cravings.

Mindful Eating and Portion Control:
As we age and navigate through menopause, we must become more mindful of listening to our bodies and understanding our hunger cues. Learning what fullness feels like and discovering the right portion sizes for our bodies is essential. It’s time to let go of the clean plate mentality and embrace the philosophy that there’s always more. By reducing portion sizes and being in tune with our hunger levels, you can create a healthier relationship with food and avoid overeating.

Exercise for Menopause:
Say goodbye to the notion that exercise has to be long and grueling to be effective. Instead, focus on short, efficient workouts that work for your unique needs and abilities. Prioritize strength training to maintain muscle mass and enhance overall strength. Ditch the idea that a good workout leaves you unable to wash your hair or get off the toilet the next day. Find exercises that challenge you without leaving you completely exhausted and overwhelmed.

Have you ever wondered what role hormones play in your overall health and well-being? There are countless misconceptions surrounding hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and the impact of hormones on women’s health. In this week’s Fit Girl Magic podcast, we explore the truth behind hormone therapy and debunk some of the common myths that have caused confusion and misinformation.

1. The Importance of Research:
When it comes to medical matters, it’s important to gather information from reliable sources and make informed decisions. Our podcast guest, Dr. Rosensweet, emphasizes the need to present all sides and encourages listeners to conduct their own research. Understanding the facts is key to breaking down misconceptions and making informed choices about your health.

2. Hormone Pellets: An Alternative Solution:
Dr. Rosensweet discusses the use of hormone pellets, which are inserted into the buttocks every three months. Not a fan of this method as it may release an undetermined about of hormone over the course of the 90 days.

3. Progesterone and Anxiety:
Did you know that progesterone, the hormone produced by ovaries, has a calming effect? Dr. Rosensweet explains that during pregnancy when progesterone levels are high, women often experience periods of extreme calmness. Many women experience anxiety as progesterone levels decline before losing their periods. However, he believes that life challenges can be difficult but not anxiety-inducing, raising questions about the correlation between progesterone decline and anxiety.

4. Hormones and Health Risks:
Contrary to popular belief, hormone therapy has been proven to have numerous health benefits for women. Research discussed in the book “Happy, Healthy Hormones” and “Estrogen Matters” reveals that women treated with hormones have a lower risk of breast cancer, heart attacks, and strokes compared to those who do not receive treatment. Even women who have had breast cancer are at a lower risk of recurrence if they are on hormone therapy. These findings challenge the prevailing notion that hormone treatment increases health risks.

5. Debunking the Women’s Health Initiative Study Committee:

Dr. Rosensweet refers to a study that came in 2002 that lead many doctors and women to believe that hormone therapy could increase breast cancer, stroke and heart attacks. However, the committee later retracted their study in 2016 after 18 years of follow-up, stating that there is no increased risk for breast cancer, heart attack, and stroke. Dr. Rosensweet advises listeners to rely on updated scientific evidence rather than outdated misconceptions.

Understanding the facts about hormone therapy is crucial for making informed decisions about your health. By debunking common myths surrounding hormones, you can empower yourself to seek the right treatments and live your best life. Remember, gathering information from reliable sources and seeking professional advice is key to making HRT less confusing.

Ladies, after you read through this blog, I want you to go and listen to the podcast! I had such a great time talking to my guest Maryann LoRusso. We dive into so many different topics that I think anyone at any age can benefit from this conversation! Not someone in their 40s or 50s! I found Maryanne on Instagram and I really loved her vibe and I know that you will too! I wanted to really have her on the show because she worked in the magazine industry back in the 90s when they told us how we should feel about our bodies, how we should look, and what diet we should follow.

Maryann is the creator of the More Beautiful Project, which includes an online magazine, podcast, and newsletter for women journeying through midlife. Maryann brings to More Beautiful more than three decades of experience as a journalist and media executive. I love that the term more beautiful can mean anything to anyone!
Maryann has come out of that industry, and we are going to talk about how that industry really shaped the women in our 40s and beyond and how it’s so different for women in their 20s!

I really love all of her content but the one word that triggered me was “midlife”! Like wait, am I midlife!?!? What makes you use the word midlife?

When I began the project, I was showing branding to some friends and the ones in their 40s etc., they weren’t ready to say they were in midlife. They weren’t sure about this term. (The 30s used to be midlife! But now it’s slowly moving up.) I used the term midlife because there is no other word… Some people think it’s a dirty word along with menopause and I wanted to take back that word, reframe it and make it more vibrant and beautiful! If I am in my midlife right now, I am thrilled! I don’t want to be at the end of my life, I want to be smack in the middle, the sweet spot!

Back in the day when you were working at these magazines, were you just, “I am assigned this story and I will write it.”, or as you were writing the stories did you think they were sending women the wrong signal?
I started very young, I graduated from journalism school in 1991 and had my first magazine job in the fashion industry when I was 23-24 and stayed for about 12 years.

I was so young I don’t think I noticed as much as I may have when I was older. I was in my 20s and I didn’t have a lot of viewpoints from women in their 40s. There was no age diversity in the industry, and it was such a youth-obsessed culture!

We lived in an unhealthy viewpoint that you had to be skinny and fit into these tiny clothes, no hips, no boobs, an unhealthy image. I understood that was wrong at the time, and over time it has changed, but the change was very slow with this. Let’s not forget that this was that generation where we were bombarded with these images. Even at a younger age, we were teenagers getting Seventeen Magazine and all those magazines we used to devour. Young, skinny, white models were on the cover, and it was so unhealthy. It was too limited, too biased, and made us feel so inadequate in so many ways.

How do you see that most women are seeing their body image? Are we still caught in our midlife in that 90s body image where we feel like there is this certain aesthetic, we need to look a certain way, versus embracing where we are?
I think we would all like to say we aren’t doing that anymore. But there is so much to get out of our heads. When you grow up with this notion and it ingrained in you like that, it’s really tough sometimes to get it out. We are slowly starting to unravel it and see what that culture did to us. I think that it’s really hard, our job is this transition generation, and to pass the buck onto our kids and daughters. I never step on the scale in front of my daughter. I never say anything about her weight. I focus on how she is feeling not looking! And that is what we should all do.

Now a lot of women are so messed up from a young age, they know they can’t put the same things on their kids that happened to them. The fact that we are a transition generation, pertains to a lot of things. We are the first generation that is getting that information that is readily available to us and it’s a lot of responsibility to undo this damage and set the tone for the next generation. Back in the 90s, there weren’t a lot of places you could get research, we didn’t have the internet. You heard it on the news, in a newspaper, or at a party. And there was no internet to research what you heard. You only got what the headline was on the newsstand and that was it.

And there was a lot of misinformation then too! We believed what we read. We believed we had to eat certain things and look a certain way because the media told us. We couldn’t fact-check, we believed what we read. And there were a lot of things our generation had to deal with. Extras to deal with! Like, we came of age in the HIV and Aids epidemic and people scared us to death! We were scared of everything!

We did get the brunt of unhealthy eating, processed foods, etc. in our generation growing up with all the plastics, plastic-wrapped foods, and microwave dinners. And so many people our age are getting so sick! And it can’t be a coincidence that this is happening! The overabundance of fast food, processed foods, easy to eat and you see the obesity in families start to rise as the years go on.

Another thing that was unique to our generation was we were told we could have everything.
We were told we are not going to be like me and just get married, but we are going to get married, have kids, and work and DO all the things. We were told we had to do it all.
And we have this thing if we don’t do 4 million things we suck! We weren’t taught that failure was okay or necessary. We were taught it was fatal.

I wish I knew then what I know now at this age about resilience and failure. So many women at our age are perfectionists or recovering perfectionists or are so afraid of failure that they always have to go back and do the same thing because they know the results will still be the same. We all have to go easier on ourselves. And once you learn to embrace imperfection and failure and all that stuff, you are easier on yourself, you are easier on other people, and all around you are just a better person and fun to be around.

“If there is one thing, I want women to take away from this conversation, just let shit go! Try new things. You don’t have to be great at everything you do. Nothing has to be perfect. Enjoy your life because God knows how much time we have. Let’s just enjoy and experiment and explore. Tap into sides of ourselves we didn’t know we had and we were too afraid to try because we didn’t think we would be good at it!” -Maryann

Things we can think about moving forward.
The goal is to plant the seed. As the listener, what do you think is the takeaway from the 90s? What are you still holding onto that maybe you didn’t think about? What have you shifted from moving forward so that you can say ya know what I don’t want to live that life anymore. Can you be more of the Calgon commercial or less of the Enjoli commercial? (check the links in the show notes if you don’t know what I am talking about!!)

In this industry, The More Beautiful Project, is this stemming from all you saw in the fashion industry back in the day?
Yes. and the same goes for The More Beautiful Podcast! I didn’t want to limit myself to just the podcast so we have more to offer people. I am also working on a book that goes with the whole project down the road. I started with this and late 2021 and I was looking around me and noticing all the women in my life, the ones that had hit that midlife point. We were feeling like is this it. Am I invisible now? Is society telling me I am irrelevant? Is there anything to look forward to? I am dealing with my body, ageism at work, etc. And I thought wait… as I am researching all of this… Everyone was telling us that we were getting LESS off as we age. And I said NO! I think we have more! We have more experience, and freedom as our kids get older, more perspective. And so many things we aren’t addressing and talking about.

I want more beautiful to be this idea that life gets more fulfilling if we choose that and this is how we are going to get it. We are going to form this community and try to figure it out together! How do we live this second part of our life?” The patriarchy painted this picture for us, and we have to take that back and REFRAME our second half of life!

A lot of us have to press pause for a second and really ask ourselves how we want to spend the second half of our lives.

What is one thing that makes you feel magical?
So many things do, but right now in this stage in my life, one thing I am realizing is that being creative and being in the flow of something really makes me come alive. I knew I enjoyed running and writing, but I didn’t quite pinpoint what about those activities. Now that I am embracing other things, when I am doing that stuff, I am lost in the moment. Time flies, I have a smile on my face, and I feel like life is just great! It rejuvenates me and gives me a new zest for life! It’s so important to tap into that as we get older.

We all have those seasons that throw us for a loop! And SUMMER is one of those seasons! Things can get busy, kids are home, you are working, you’re going on vacations, driving kids to camps, and so on and so forth! I get it you’re busy, so let’s take a look at summer and see how you can make it more fluid! Every 90 days you can evaluate where you are, look at it by season! So, as you go into summer, let’s look at it as the start of the next round of 90 days.

Where many of our expectations fall short is that you tell yourself how it has to look. It has to look a certain way, how Sharon did it, how Susan did it and Lori did it! But you are you! When I stopped chasing what other people were doing, I found my stride! So, let’s find YOUR stride and talk about how you can have a guilt-free summer! Let’s spend the next 12 weeks not obsessing about eating and not obsessing about my workouts!

Ladies, I can’t tell you how many summers I spent anxiety-ridden and not doing anything guilt-free. I let food control me. I was so afraid of food. One little slip-up and I was off the rails because I was holding on too damn tight. Then one day I got sick of my own shit, and I didn’t want to be that girl anymore! I now know that one off track meal isn’t going to cause me to spiral, and I want that for you.

Realistic.
As you get into the summer, know that it can be a busy time that you could be shuttling your kids from one place to the next. Map out what summer is going to look like for you, so you do not have to keep up with the same routine. If you know you will be traveling more and your regular routine will be disrupted, then this is where I am going to say, “Hey.. What looks realistic for you?”. Build things around this! How can I create a realistic goal?

Go with the good, better, best method I am always talking about! Look at this when it comes to working out. What do your summer months look like? And know that this can look different than non-summer months! What would my workout look like with these realistic expectations? What do my workouts look like? What is the bare minimum for food?

And this all comes down to our non-negotiables. It’s really easy to get lost in the days. We wake up and all of a sudden, it’s 4pm. This is where you have to have some structure. Every day you have a little something you look forward to!

Don’t be afraid to eat out and share meals! Eat out and enjoy it. It’s okay to share a meal when you go out! But enjoy it and just stick with those non negotiables to balance everything out.

Make healthy choices.
Back to the good, better and best. You don’t have to throw good eating habits out the window, but you can make some trade-offs! I want that yummy appetizer or entree, can I have it all? If you decide you can have it all, make that decision and move on! Eat until you’re full and be okay with it. It’s okay if you leave some food behind!

Alcohol
I am never that coach that will say why are you drinking that booze? Instead, make a choice. I am going out; I am only having 2 glasses of wine or I am going out and I am going to have no drinks. Decide what that looks like for you and cut yourself off at that second drink. Have a wine spritzer and focus on distilled beverages vs fruity, tropical, and blended drinks!

Be prepared and plan ahead.
When you’re out or on vacation, do your best to pack a good cooler full of food. And this doesn’t have to be week’s worth of food. What are the foods you can bring for a road trip, or to the beach or lake for the day? What are things you can pack in there? Healthy sandwich, fresh fruit, vegetables, nuts, protein shake, bars and water! Do this so that you know you can make better choices instead of pulling over to a rest stop and grabbing junk!

Summer is all about planning ahead. I have to look at my week ahead of time so that I know what I am doing this week, or the week ahead. You are going away for the week, am I going out to dinner every night? Am I looking forward to someplace? What are the things in your week that you may be looking forward to? Create a fun budget that you will spend on that particular meal. How can I incorporate more of this fun? Is there a farmers’ market near where you are traveling to get fresh fruits and vegetables for the week?

While I am on vacation, it’s not all about sticking to your diet 100%! But it’s also not throwing it out the window! How do you do your best to balance this without making yourself crazy or making those around me crazy? Be choosy about what you are going to do!

Exercise.
When it comes to exercise, think about exercising half the days you are away. If I am on vacation or at a hotel, I am at a beach house. I do my best to stick to my schedule, but I am also sometimes with friends and don’t want to be the girl to get up at 5am and make sure I get my workout in to earn my free time. Make it a goal to workout at least half the days you are away; A run, a walk, rent a bike paddle board, kayak, etc. Aim for 5,000 to 10,000 steps every single day! There are so many ways to get a workout now and in my Fit Girl Magic Society, I make sure that the workouts I give my girls can be easily adapted.

Expectations.
As you start to think about summer, I really want you to say, how do I want my summer to go down? When I know what I want for my summer, then I can set my expectations accordingly. Don’t expect your summer to look exactly like your winter. Maybe you have all the time in the winter, but summer is a different story. Determine what your choices are. What are your choices for food and workouts and how are you going to make that work for you?

Your motivation is your why…
From May 1st to September 1st. What do I want? Do you want to enjoy your summer without feeling guilty? Do you want to enjoy your summer without stress and anxiety about what you are eating? Then get creative! It may not be 4 cycle classes a week, maybe it’s only 1 a month and be okay with it. Maybe your workouts are you and a video!
Maybe it’s you and dumbbells at home! Think outside the box! Come up with your own non-negotiable and stick to them!

Consistency.
That is the piece that everyone is missing! How do I just keep going even when it doesn’t look like it is working? How do I keep going if I am not nailing this every single time, I do this? How do I add on to what I am doing? Am I changing things? It’s a puzzle and it’s ok!

I want to tell you I am not doing this alone, and I don’t want you to feel like you are doing it alone. This summer I am creating a consistency challenge so you can say, “How can I be more consistent, so you aren’t chasing said diet!” I want you to be so accountable for yourself so that next summer you are not like, “Oh summer fuck it! I’ll wait till fall!”

You are going to be so consistent that you won’t even recognize yourself after this challenge is over!! If this sounds good, do me a favor and click the link below to join us!!
