I’m going to admit something slightly embarrassing.

I listened to The Five-Star Weekend audiobook while packing up the last pieces of my life in Boston.

And somewhere between the tape gun, the cardboard boxes, and trying to figure out why I own 47 black tank tops, something hit me.

The main character suddenly loses her husband and has to figure out who she is without the life she built around him.

Now before you panic, Philip is alive and well and still questioning my collection of black leggings.

But there was something about that story that landed differently for me this time.

Because I’m not just moving houses.

I’m leaving behind 30 years of identity.

Boston Kim.
Fitness Kim.
The version of me who had every grocery store aisle memorized.
The version of me who knew exactly what every day looked like.
The version of me who could practically run her life like a military operation with protein powder.

And now?

I’m standing in Florida staring at blue plastic bags full of clothes wondering:
“Wait… what actually is my life now?”

The Routine That Once Worked

For years I believed the answer to everything was hustle.

Work harder.
Wake up earlier.
Earn your food.
Earn your rest.
Earn your fun.
Earn your worth.

And honestly? A lot of us Gen X women were raised this way.

We took pride in being grinders.

I definitely did.

I wore “busy” like it was a designer label.

Back in my 30s, I was working out two hours a day, meal prepping like it was a competitive sport, teaching classes, tracking macros, chasing soreness like it was proof I mattered.

And at the time? That routine fit my life.

But here’s the thing nobody talks about:

Just because something worked for you before doesn’t mean it belongs in your life forever.

Sometimes your life changes before your mindset catches up.

And that’s where so many women get stuck.

They keep trying to shove an old routine into a completely different season of life.

Your Life Outgrew the Routine

I see this all the time with women over 40.

They tell me:
“But back in the day I used to…”

Girl.
I know.

Back in the day you also had different hormones, different responsibilities, different stress levels, different energy, and maybe fewer people needing pieces of you all day long.

Your life evolved.

Your routine probably needs to evolve too.

That doesn’t mean you’re lazy.
It doesn’t mean you’ve failed.
It doesn’t mean you’re “letting yourself go.”

It just means the old system no longer matches the life you actually have.

And honestly?
That realization can feel weirdly emotional.

Because routines become identities.

The Brick Wall Moment

For me, the shift started years ago.

I stopped wanting fitness to run my entire life.

I stopped wanting my self-worth tied to whether I got a workout in.

I stopped wanting every vacation, dinner, and random Tuesday to revolve around food tracking and “being good.”

And then life kept nudging me harder.

A friend of mine had a stroke from the grind.

Not metaphorically.
Literally.

And it made me realize how normalized exhaustion had become.

We clap for burnout like it’s ambition.

We act like rest is something you unlock after enough suffering.

And I just don’t want to live like that anymore.

I don’t want to earn my existence.

What This Season Looks Like

Right now I’m in a full wandering season.

I haven’t worked out consistently in weeks.
My steps are questionable at best.
I still don’t know where half my kitchen stuff is.

But I have focused on two things:
Protein.
Sleep.

That’s it.

Because this season isn’t asking me to become a machine.

It’s asking me to settle in.
To connect.
To explore.
To figure out what fun looks like when it’s not attached to productivity or a paycheck.

And honestly?
That’s harder than any diet I’ve ever done.

A lot of us don’t actually know how to relax.

We know how to “be productive while pretending to relax.”

Very different skill set.

Maybe You’re Not Off Track

Maybe the reason your old routine feels impossible isn’t because you need more discipline.

Maybe it’s because your life is asking for something different now.

Less punishment.
Less hustle.
Less proving.

More support.
More flexibility.
More actual living.

Maybe this season isn’t about squeezing yourself back into an old version of you.

Maybe it’s about building a life that finally fits who you are now.

And honestly?

That might be the healthiest thing you ever do.

Why Women Over 40 Don’t Need More Discipline

“If I could just be more disciplined…”

Honestly? Most women over 40 have said this to themselves at least 4,782 times. Usually while meal prepping chicken they don’t even want to eat or promising themselves THIS is the Monday everything changes.

And look, I get it.

We’ve been taught that consistency comes from grinding harder, wanting it more, and somehow becoming the kind of woman who never misses workouts, never stress eats, and apparently enjoys drinking plain water while everyone else orders margaritas.

But here’s the thing:

If white-knuckling worked…
If more rules worked…
If blaming yourself into better habits worked…

You wouldn’t still be stuck on the same diet merry-go-round.

The problem isn’t that women aren’t trying hard enough.

The problem is that most women are trying to force perfection into a life that is wildly human.

Life Gets Lifey

One of the biggest mindset shifts I’ve had over the years is realizing that consistency is not about controlling life.

Because life will absolutely start life-ing all over your plans.

Hormones shift.
Motivation disappears.
Vacations happen.
Work gets stressful.
Parents need help.
Sleep gets weird.
Your schedule changes.
Your husband retires and suddenly there’s another human wandering around your kitchen 24/7 asking where things are.

And every time life gets messy, women think:
“Well… I fell off.”

No.
You had a busy week.
There’s a difference.

Women Don’t Need More Rules

Honestly, I think women have enough rules already.

No carbs after 7.
Drink the greens powder.
Track every bite.
10k steps.
Don’t eat too much fruit.
Don’t skip workouts.
But also don’t overtrain.
Protein at every meal.
Don’t eat late.
Don’t drink alcohol.
Sleep 8 hours.
Meditate.
Journal.
Dry brush your left elbow under a full moon.

At some point your wellness routine starts feeling like a full-time unpaid internship.

And then women wonder why they can’t “stay disciplined.”

Maybe it’s because no one can sustainably live like that.

The Missing Piece Is Usually Self-Trust

Most women think they need more discipline.

But what they actually need is self-trust.

Because years of all-or-nothing thinking quietly chips away at your confidence in yourself.

Every Monday restart.
Every “I blew it.”
Every extreme plan you couldn’t maintain.
Every time you quit because life got busy.

Over time, you stop trusting your own word.

That’s why small promises matter so much.

Not because they’re flashy.
Because they rebuild trust.

Going for the walk.
Doing the 20-minute workout.
Adding protein to breakfast.
Going to bed earlier.
Choosing “done enough” instead of quitting entirely.

Those tiny actions send your brain a powerful message:
“I’ve got my own back.”

And honestly?
That matters way more than another perfect meal plan.

Self-Worth Changes Everything

A lot of women approach health from a place of punishment.

“I’ll feel better about myself when…”
“When I lose the weight.”
“When I get consistent.”
“When I finally fix myself.”

But self-worth doesn’t work like that.

Your worth is not earned through suffering.

Not through shrinking.
Not through exhaustion.
Not through proving how much you can handle before collapsing on the couch with a protein bar and resentment.

Self-worth is the foundation.

And when women start building health from a place of self-worth instead of self-punishment, everything changes.

Workouts stop becoming punishment.
Food stops becoming morality.
Rest stops feeling lazy.
Consistency stops feeling impossible.

Real Consistency Looks Boring Sometimes

I think social media sold women this idea that consistency should feel exciting all the time.

Spoiler:
It usually doesn’t.

Real consistency often looks like:
Doing the basics.
Adjusting instead of quitting.
Returning to yourself faster.
Not turning one “off” meal into a three-week spiral.

That’s the stuff that actually works long term.

Not intensity.
Not perfection.
Not suffering.

Just learning how to support yourself through real life instead of trying to become some perfectly optimized robot woman who never gets tired or stressed.

Because the goal was never becoming perfect.

The goal was building a life and a body that can actually support YOU.

“If your plan only works when life is calm… it’s not a real plan.”

Let’s just start there.

Because if you’ve ever felt like you “fell off” your routine when life got busy, stressful, or just plain chaotic… you’re not the problem.

Your plan is.

The Real Reason You Keep Starting Over

Most women I talk to don’t struggle because they’re lazy or inconsistent.

They struggle because they’re trying to follow a plan that only works in a calm, controlled life.

And let’s be honest…

When is life ever calm?

Between work, family, travel, stress, and everything else on your plate, your life isn’t designed for perfection.

But most fitness plans are.

They expect:

Perfect workouts

Perfect meal prep

Perfect timing

Perfect consistency

And the second life gets messy?

The whole thing falls apart.

Life Doesn’t Slow Down… So Your Plan Has to Adapt

Over the past couple of months, my life has been anything but calm.

I’ve been:

Packing up 30 years in Boston

Decluttering my entire house

Managing contractors

Running my business and supporting clients

Preparing for a major move to Florida

Has my routine been perfect?

Not even close.

But here’s what didn’t happen:

I didn’t quit.
I didn’t start over.
I didn’t tell myself I “fell off.”

The Shift That Changes Everything

Instead of trying to force a “perfect” plan into a chaotic season, I adjusted.

I focused on three things:

1. Bare Minimums

What’s the least I can do to stay in the game?

Not crush it.
Not optimize it.
Just stay consistent enough to keep momentum.

2. Non-Negotiables

What actually matters right now?

For me, that might look like:

Getting in a few strength sessions each week

Prioritizing protein

Moving my body daily (even if it’s just a walk)

3. Knowing My Season

This is the big one.

Not every season of life is meant for fat loss, pushing harder, or doing more.

Right now?

I’m in a “hold the line” season.

What Is a “Hold the Line” Season?

A hold the line season means:

You’re not pushing for aggressive results

You’re not trying to be perfect

You’re focused on maintaining consistency

You’re protecting your habits instead of leveling them up

Because when your schedule gets overwhelming, the goal isn’t to do more…

It’s to not burn the whole thing down.

Why Your Old Plan Isn’t Working Anymore

Here’s where most women get stuck:

They try to follow a plan that worked at 30… in a completely different life at 40, 50, or beyond.

But your life has changed:

More responsibilities

Different energy levels

More stress

Less time

And yet the expectations?

Exactly the same.

That’s the disconnect.

Stop Waiting for the “Right Time”

Another trap?

Waiting.

Waiting until:

Life calms down

You feel more motivated

You have more time

You’re “ready”

But here’s the truth:

Ready is a state of mind, not a moment that magically shows up.

Life isn’t going to pause so you can get your routine together.

You have to build a routine that works with your life… not against it.

What Actually Works Long-Term

If you want results that last, you don’t need a stricter plan.

You need a more flexible one.

One that:

Adjusts with your schedule

Works in both calm and chaotic seasons

Prioritizes consistency over perfection

Helps you stay in the game no matter what

Because real progress doesn’t come from going all in for a few weeks.

It comes from staying consistent… even when life isn’t perfect.

The Question You Need to Ask Yourself

Instead of asking:

“What’s the perfect plan?”

Start asking:

“What actually fits my life right now?”

Because that’s the plan you’ll stick to.

Final Thought

You didn’t fall off.

You just tried to run a “perfect life” plan in a real life moment.

And that was never going to work.

Want More?

If this hit home, I break this down even deeper in this week’s episode of Fit Girl Magic—including how to identify your current season and adjust your plan without starting over.

👉 Give it a listen and start building a plan that actually works for your life.

You’re already walking.

Trying to be consistent. Trying to “do the right things.”

And then out of nowhere…
your feed is like:

👉 you need a weighted vest
👉 you should be doing more
👉 walking alone isn’t enough

And suddenly your brain goes,
“Maybe that’s what I’m missing…”

So now you’re this close to buying something that, let’s be honest, might end up next to your resistance bands from 2020.

Let’s pause for a second.

Because the problem usually isn’t that you’re not doing enough.

It’s that you’re making something simple way more complicated than it needs to be.

Let’s Talk About Rucking

In my latest Fit Girl Magic podcast, I sat down with Kayla Girgen, and we talked about rucking.

Which, at its core, is just…
walking with weight.

That’s it.

Not CrossFit.
Not military bootcamp.
Not “if you’re not sweating, you’re not working.”

Just walking… with a little more intention.

And here’s what I loved most about the conversation:

👉 You don’t need to overhaul your life
👉 You don’t need perfect conditions
👉 You don’t even need fancy equipment

You can literally grab a backpack, throw in a dumbbell or a couple books, and go.

Weighted Vest vs Backpack (What Actually Matters)

This is where people start to spiral.

“Should I get the vest?”
“Is the backpack better?”
“What weight should I use?”

And suddenly something that could take 5 minutes to start… turns into a research project.

Here’s the simple breakdown:

A weighted vest distributes weight front and back

A ruck (backpack) keeps weight on your back and can actually help posture

The bigger difference?

👉 Vests are usually fixed weight
👉 Backpacks are adjustable (aka way easier to progress)

But honestly?

That’s not even the most important part.

The most important part is…
you actually doing it.

The Biggest Mistake (And You Already Know This One)

Waiting for the perfect time.

“I’ll start when the weather is nicer.”
“I’ll start when things calm down.”
“I’ll start when I feel more motivated.”

Sound familiar?

Meanwhile… weeks go by.

And nothing changes.

Here’s the truth:

The hardest part is the first walk.

After that?
It gets a whole lot easier.

How to Start Without Overthinking It

You don’t need a plan. You need a starting point.

Try this:

Grab a backpack

Add ~10 pounds (books, dumbbell, whatever you’ve got)

Go for a walk

That’s it.

You don’t need:
❌ a specific route
❌ a perfect outfit
❌ a 60-minute window

Just start.

Let’s Talk About the “Do More” Trap

This is where most women get stuck.

You think:
“If I’m not pushing harder, it doesn’t count.”

So, you:

add more workouts

increase intensity

pile on expectations

…and then wonder why you can’t stay consistent.

Here’s the reframe:

Some days you push.
Some days you hold the line.
Some days you just go for the damn walk.

👉 All of it counts.

The Part No One Talks About (But You’ll Feel Immediately)

The mental shift.

Yes, rucking can:

help build strength

support bone density

increase intensity without wrecking your joints

But the real magic?

It gets you out of your head.

There’s something about walking—with a little load—that makes you:

stop overthinking

stop spiraling

actually breathe

It’s simple… but it works.

Final Thought

You don’t need another plan.

You don’t need more motivation.

And you definitely don’t need to make your routine harder just to feel like it “counts.”

You just need to make it easier to show up.

Want the Full Breakdown?

If this hit… go listen to the full Fit Girl Magic podcast episode with Kayla Girgen.

We go deeper into:

how to progress weight

how to fit this into your current routine

and how to stop overcomplicating your workouts for good

Boxes everywhere.
Contractors in and out.
Four rooms getting painted.

It looks like a Home Depot exploded in my living room.

And the wild part?

My brain still tried to convince me I could run workout schedule as usual.

Old Me Would’ve Done This

Old me would’ve sat down Sunday night like a woman on a mission.

“Okay… if I wake up earlier, move things around, if they come on time and everything goes perfectly…
I can still hit 5 workouts.”

I would’ve mapped it all out like a perfectly engineered schedule.

And when it didn’t work — because it never does —
I’d go to bed annoyed.

Frustrated.

Already planning how tomorrow was going to be different.

And not once did I think to change the plan.

Let that sink in.

The Real Problem No One Talks About

Most people think they lack discipline.

They think:

“I just need to try harder.”

“I need to get it together.”

No.

You don’t need more discipline.

You need a plan that actually fits your life.

Because here’s the truth no one wants to admit:

You’re trying to run a perfect-week plan in a very imperfect life.

And that will fail every single time.

What Changed for Me

Now?

I look at my life and call it like it is.

My life is chaos right now.

So instead of pretending everything’s going to magically line up…
I plan for what’s actually doable.

Not ideal.

Not aspirational.

Doable.

That might look like:

And let’s be honest…

When has life ever truly calmed down?

And when your plan matches your life?

Let me say the quiet part out loud.

Most women over 40 think their problem is consistency.

You’ve probably said it yourself:

“I just need to get back on track.”
“I just need more discipline.”
“I know what to do… I just need to do it.”

But after working with women for more than 15 years, I’ve noticed something interesting.

Most women aren’t inconsistent.

Their life is just full.

And that changes everything.

The Real Reason Healthy Habits Feel Harder in Midlife

When you were 30 or 35, your life looked different.

You may have had:

• More time for workouts
• More predictable schedules
• Better sleep
• Less stress
• Fewer responsibilities competing for your energy

Fast forward to your 40s and 50s.

Now your calendar looks like a game of Tetris.

Work deadlines.
Kids’ schedules.
Travel.
Family responsibilities.

And on top of that, your body is changing too.

Hormones fluctuate.
Recovery takes longer.
Sleep doesn’t hit the same way it used to.

Yet many women are still trying to follow the same diet and workout plan they used 15 years ago.

Two-hour workouts.
Strict diets.
White-knuckling weekends.

No wonder it feels like you’re constantly starting over.

You’re trying to run a high-intensity plan with midlife bandwidth.

And honestly?

The math just isn’t mathing.

Why Discipline and Willpower Aren’t the Problem

The fitness industry loves to tell women that success comes down to motivation, discipline, and wanting it badly enough.

But here’s the truth.

Most women already want it.

They’re smart.
They know what to eat.
They know exercise matters.

The problem isn’t knowledge.

The problem is capacity.

Capacity means:

• How much time you have
• How much energy you have
• How much stress you’re carrying
• How much mental bandwidth is available

When your capacity is maxed out, even the best plan in the world will feel impossible to follow.

Not because you’re lazy.

Because you’re human.

Why Old Fitness Strategies Stop Working After 40

Think about technology for a second.

When was the last time you used a VCR?

Or even a DVD player?

Technology evolves.

We upgraded to streaming.

Same movies, different system.

Your body works the same way.

As you move through midlife, your body is running a different operating system.

That means your health strategy has to evolve too.

Trying to run the same plan you followed at 35 isn’t proof that you’re failing.

It’s proof that the strategy needs an update.

The Three Health Seasons Most Women Don’t Know About

One of the biggest mindset shifts I teach is understanding that your health has different seasons.

Instead of constantly trying to push harder, you need to know which season you’re actually in.

Push Season

This is your fat-loss phase.

You have the bandwidth to focus, dial in your habits, and pursue a clear goal.

Pull Season

This is when you’re restoring energy, rebuilding metabolism, and refueling your body after a more intense phase.

Hold-the-Line Season

This is maintenance.

You’re protecting the progress you’ve made without pushing aggressively.

None of these seasons are wrong.

But most women are constantly trying to push even when their life clearly requires them to pull or hold.

That’s where frustration shows up.

Why 90-Day Planning Works Better Than Yearly Goals

Another reason healthy habits fall apart is because most people plan their health like this:

“This is my year.”

January rolls around and suddenly you’re trying to overhaul your entire life.

The problem?

A year is too big.

A much better approach is thinking in 90-day seasons.

Shorter time frames help you:

• Focus on realistic goals
• Adjust when life changes
• Stay motivated with visible progress
• Build habits that actually fit your life

Instead of trying to fix everything at once, you focus on the next 90 days.

That small shift makes consistency much easier.

What Consistency Actually Looks Like in Midlife

Consistency after 40 doesn’t look like perfection.

It looks like alignment.

Your habits match your current life season.

Your workouts match your energy levels.

Your expectations match your schedule.

When your strategy fits your life, healthy habits stop feeling like a constant uphill battle.

And suddenly, the thing you thought you were missing…

consistency

starts showing up naturally.

One Question to Think About

Before you go, I’m curious:

What’s one workout or diet you used to swear by that makes you laugh now?

Your answer might reveal more about your current season than you realize.

Before you jump into another fat loss phase… I want us to pause for a second. Because if dieting has “almost worked” for you the last five years… why do you feel like you need to start over again?

In this Fit Girl Magic podcast episode, I’m calling out one of the biggest midlife mistakes I see on repeat: Most women don’t have a fat loss problem.

They have a readiness problem. You might be sitting there thinking — WTF does that even mean? Stick with me. Because it’s not about how bad you “want” fat loss. Let’s be honest, who doesn’t? But here’s what nobody’s talking about: forcing a perma-diet when your body is already tapped out isn’t discipline. It’s just making things worse.

Your body might just need a breather before it can actually do the thing you’re asking it to do. If you’ve been running on fumes by mid-afternoon, white-knuckling your hunger, mentally negotiating every bite, or doing all the “right” things and somehow still feeling like garbage… this episode is your permission slip to stop pushing and start getting strategic. I’m talking about how to actually tell where your body is at and whether it’s time to push, pull back, or just hold the line. Because fat loss in the wrong season doesn’t just not work. It keeps you stuck in the same loop year after year. You are not broken. Your timing might just be off. I

n This Episode We Get Into:

Why wanting it badly isn’t your problem, the sneaky signs your body is running on empty, my 5-question gut check so you can stop guessing, why maintenance is actually a skill (and why it matters more than you think), and the 3-gear strategy that changes everything: Push, Pull Back, or Hold the Line.

Sometimes the most strategic move isn’t doing more. It’s doing less, on purpose.

Ready to Figure Out Where You’re At?

I made a quiz for exactly this moment: Is Your Metabolism Tired AF? It takes few minutes and tells you whether your body is ready to push, pull back, or hold the line. No more winging it.

Go take it, I think you’ll find it really eye-opening. If this episode hit home, screenshot it, share it on Instagram, and tag @kimjeffersoncoach. And follow the show so you never miss an episode.

If you’ve ever said,
“I’m doing everything right… and nothing is changing,”
this one’s for you.

You’re disciplined.
You’re consistent.
You’re not winging it.

And somehow… your belly fat is still hanging on, your energy is trash, and the scale hasn’t budged in forever.

Here’s the plot twist no one prepared you for:
It’s probably not because you’re doing something wrong.
It’s because you’re doing all the same things that used to work.

And your body is done playing along.

Effort and Effectiveness Are Not the Same Thing

Somewhere along the way, we were taught that results come from suffering.

Less food.
More workouts.
Tighter rules.
Push harder.

So we turned discipline into a badge of honor.

The problem?
Your body doesn’t reward suffering.
It survives it.

In your 20s and 30s, you could under-eat, over-exercise, sleep like crap, live on stress and still see results.

After 40?
Your body starts keeping receipts.

Hormones shift.
Recovery matters.
Stress hits harder.
Sleep is no longer optional.

When you keep applying your old rules to your new body, your body pushes back.
Not because it’s broken.
Because it’s smarter.

Your Life Changed. Your Plan Didn’t.

Here’s where things get messy.

Your life is fuller now.
More responsibilities.
Less margin.
Less energy to burn it all down in the gym for two hours a day.

But instead of looking at your life and saying,
“Things are different now,” you blame yourself.

“What’s wrong with me?”
“Why can’t I keep up?”
“I used to be so disciplined.”

So you quit… waiting for the mythical “perfect time” to go back to the old plan.

That’s not inconsistency.
That’s trying to be consistent with a plan that no longer fits your life.

This Isn’t a Willpower Problem. It’s a Mismatch.

Most women I work with aren’t stuck because they failed.

They’re stuck because their body adapted.

Years of eating the same foods.
The same calories.
The same routines.

On paper? Crushing it.
In reality? Stalled.

Your body is insanely smart. If you feed it the same input long enough, it learns how to survive on it.

That’s not failure.
That’s biology.

Why “Trying Harder” Makes It Worse

When results stop coming, most women do the only thing they’ve ever been taught:

Eat less.
Add more workouts.
Clamp down harder.

But here’s the truth no supplement label tells you:

You can’t out-supplement chronic under-eating.
You can’t out-cardio stress.
You can’t ignore sleep and expect fat loss to cooperate.

This isn’t a deficiency problem.
It’s a math problem.

The Real Shift: From Restriction to Rebuilding

At some point, eating more isn’t quitting.

It’s rebuilding.

Not recklessly.
Not overnight.
Intentionally.

Small additions.
Tiny upgrades.
Enough fuel so your body finally has something to work with.

That’s when energy comes back.
Workouts feel better.
Recovery improves.
And body composition actually starts to change.

Not because you hacked anything.
Because you stopped running your body on fumes.

Body Composition > The Scale

Most women were taught the scale is the only measure that matters.

But the things you actually care about?
Belly fat.
Arms.
Thighs.
How clothes fit.
How you feel in your body.

That doesn’t change from losing two pounds.

It changes when you build muscle.
And muscle requires fuel.

You can’t eat 1,200 calories, lift heavy, and wonder where your strength went.
That’s not how bodies work.

So… What Phase Are You In?

This is where most women get stuck again.

“Should I eat more?”
“Should I maintain?”
“Can I push fat loss right now?”
“Or do I need to restore first?”

Guessing keeps you looping.

That’s why I created the Is Your Metabolism Tired AF? quiz.
It helps you figure out whether your body needs restoration, rebuilding, maintenance, or a focused fat-loss phase, without guilt, extremes, or panic.

Because doing “everything right” with the wrong strategy will keep you stuck every time.

And you deserve better than that.

Let’s just get this out of the way…

If January diets worked, you wouldn’t still be Googling “why can’t I lose weight after 40” every single year.

And yet… here we are.

You’re not lazy.
You’re not broken.
You’re not “bad at discipline.”

You’re just trying to use a strategy that was never built for a midlife body.

And honestly? January might be the worst possible time to start a diet especially if you’re over 40, perimenopausal, menopausal, or postmenopausal.

Let’s talk about why.

January Feels Productive… But That’s the Trap

January has this sneaky energy.

Fresh calendar.
Fresh planner.
Fresh sense of “I’m getting my life together.”

It feels responsible to start a diet in January. Like… if you don’t, are you even trying?

But here’s the truth most people won’t say out loud:

January dieting works because it gives your anxious brain something to control.

Checklists.
Rules.
“Eat this, not that.”
Do this workout.
Avoid that food.

And if you’re anything like the women I work with, you’re really good at following rules. You can white-knuckle just about anything… for a while.

But that doesn’t mean it’s sustainable.

Why Diets Stop Working After 40

Here’s the part no one prepares you for.

After 40, your body changes.
Your stress response changes.
Your hormones change.
Your recovery changes.

And yet the advice stays the same:
Eat less. Move more. Try harder.

That’s a problem.

Because after 40, your body isn’t looking for punishment it’s looking for safety.

When you pile restriction on top of holiday stress, travel, sugar, disrupted sleep, and emotional overload, your nervous system doesn’t think, “Ah yes, glow-up season.”

It thinks: “Threat detected.”

And when your body feels threatened, it does what it’s designed to do:

Holds onto weight

Cranks up cravings

Tanks your energy

Makes consistency feel impossible

This is why so many women feel like their metabolism is “broken.”

It’s not broken.
It’s protective.

The January Diet Lie No One Talks About

Here’s the part that stings a little.

January dieting gives you the illusion of control.

It feels productive.
It feels responsible.
It feels like you’re finally “doing something.”

But what it often does is delay the real work:
Learning how to eat, train, and live in a way that actually fits your life now.

Not your 30-year-old life.
Not your pre-kids life.
Not your “I used to do two-a-days” life.

Your current life.

And I know this because I lived the extreme version.

I competed in fitness shows. January was go-time. No social life. No flexibility. Tunnel vision. And yeah… it worked.

Until it didn’t.

Because I wasn’t training for life. I was training for a deadline.

And most women over 40 don’t want to live like that anymore. They want energy, confidence, freedom, and a body that doesn’t feel like it’s fighting them.

Why January Isn’t the Time to Push Harder

Here’s what January actually is:

A recovery month.
A stabilization month.
A “let’s stop the chaos” month.

Your nervous system is still coming down from:

Holiday stress

Family dynamics

Travel

Schedule chaos

Emotional overload

And then we expect it to thrive under restriction?

Nope.

January is about creating safety, not scarcity.

It’s about asking:

What can I do consistently right now?

What feels doable instead of dramatic?

What supports my energy instead of draining it?

This is where most people miss the magic.

Consistency Isn’t Doing Everything

It’s Doing One Thing Well

You don’t need a 12-step plan.
You don’t need to “lock in.”
You don’t need a full reset.

You need one to three non-negotiables you can actually stick with.

That might look like:

Eating enough protein

Going for daily walks

Getting to bed earlier

Drinking more water

Strength training a few days a week

Not all of it.
Just enough to build momentum.

Because consistency doesn’t mean constant.
It means repeatable.

And that’s where real change happens.

You’re Not Behind. You’re Actually Early.

Let’s clear this up:

You’re not late.
You’re not behind.
You didn’t miss the window.

You’re just finally ready to do this in a way that doesn’t burn you out.

January isn’t about punishment.
It’s about setting the runway.

And if you do that right?
The rest of the year gets a whole lot easier.

Want Help Doing This the Smart Way?

I’m breaking all of this down inside my free masterclass:

Your Body Isn’t Broken After 40. The Signals Just Changed.

If you’re over 40 and feel like your body suddenly stopped responding to the same things that used to work…

you’re not imagining it.

Same workouts.

Same discipline.

Same “doing the right things.”

Different results.

And before you blame motivation, age, or “letting yourself go,” let’s clear something up:

This isn’t a willpower problem.

It’s a communication problem.

The Missing Piece No One Explained

On a recent podcast episode, I sat down with Dr. Aleksandra Gajer, a conventionally trained ER physician who left traditional medicine after watching too many women get dismissed with some version of:

“Your labs are normal.”

“This is just aging.”

“Eat less. Move more.”

What she explained was simple and eye-opening:

After 40, the body’s internal signaling system changes.

Hormones shift.

Stress tolerance shrinks.

Recovery slows.

And the chemical messengers that tell your body how to respond to exercise, food, sleep, and stress start turning down the volume.

You’re still doing the habits.

Your body just isn’t responding the same way.

What Are Peptides (Without the Science Headache)?

Peptides are short chains of amino acids. Think of them as text messages inside the body.

They don’t force change.

They don’t override your system.

They don’t replace good habits.

They signal.

After 40, your body naturally produces fewer of these signals. That’s not failure. That’s biology conserving energy as reproductive years wind down.Peptides can help turn the signal back up so your body can actually respond to:

Strength training

Adequate protein

Sleep

Recovery

Stress management

Or as Dr. Aleksandra Gajer put it perfectly:

Peptides don’t replace healthy habits. They help your body respond to them again.

Why “Eat Less, Move More” Falls Apart in Midlife

This advice assumes the system is working normally.

But midlife bodies are dealing with:

Increased stress hormones

Estrogen dominance

Lower progesterone (your calming hormone)

Reduced growth hormone production

Inflammation driven by modern food environments

Fat tissue itself becomes hormonally active, releasing inflammatory signals and even producing estrogen. That’s why belly fat shows up differently after 40 and why pushing harder often backfires.

This is also why women can feel wired, tired, bloated, and stuck all at the same time.

The Non-Negotiables Still Matter

Here’s the part people don’t love to hear (but need):

Peptides do nothing if lifestyle is chaos.

They don’t build muscle for you.

They don’t cancel stress.

They don’t replace sleep.

Dr. Aleksandra Gajer is very clear about this: peptides are the icing, not the cake.

The foundation still matters:

Eating real food

Getting enough protein and fiber

Strength training consistently

Managing stress

Sleeping enough

Peptides can make those things feel possible again. That’s the magic.

Why Buying Anything From “Random Guy on Instagram” Is a Bad Idea

Not all peptides are created equal.

Some internet-sold peptides are contaminated, improperly dosed, or not sterile. Others haven’t been tested for inflammatory compounds that can do real harm.

This isn’t something to DIY based on a TikTok reel.

Working with a knowledgeable medical professional who understands your history, labs, and goals matters. A lot.

The Bigger Shift Happening Right Now

What excites me most about this conversation isn’t peptides themselves.

It’s the shift away from:

Blaming women

Minimizing symptoms

Accepting “this is just how it is now”

And toward:

Supporting the body

Understanding signals

Training for longevity, not punishment

Midlife health isn’t about doing more.

It’s about doing things differently, with better information and better support.

Final Thought

If you’ve been blaming yourself for results that stopped showing up…

Pause.

Your body might not need more discipline.

It might need clearer signals.

And that changes everything.

If this sparked a lightbulb, the full podcast episode dives even deeper into hormones, peptides, muscle, brain health, and why midlife is actually the right time to rethink how you take care of yourself.

And if nothing else, let this land:

You’re not broken.

You’re just in a new season.
