Let’s talk oils.
If you’re anything like me, you’ve stood in the middle of the grocery store aisle squinting at labels, convinced that “cold-pressed,” “extra virgin,” or “organic” was your golden ticket to hormone harmony and glowing skin.
Spoiler alert: it’s not that simple.
This week, I had a full-circle moment and sat down with Udo Erasmus, the founder of Udo’s Oil and one of the OGs of the healthy fat movement. (Yes—that Udo. As in, “Your body needs an oil change” Udo.)
And friends… he did not come to play. He came with facts, truth bombs, and science-backed mic drops that made me question every bottle of oil in my pantry.
Here’s what blew my mind:
“Cold-Pressed” Doesn’t Always Mean Clean
Turns out, that “cold-pressed” olive oil might’ve been heated to frying temps during processing. Yeah. Apparently, the term has no legal definition, so companies can spin it however they want. Udo called it what it is: marketing fluff.
Damaged Oils = Damaged You
Udo broke down how just 1% damage in an oil means 60 QUINTILLION damaged molecules per tablespoon. Yes, quintillion. With a “Q.” That’s more than a million damaged particles per cell in your body. Every. Single. Day.
Now imagine cooking with it. Now imagine cooking with it for 30 years. Yeah.
Frying Is a Full-Body Betrayal
If you’re still using your frying pan like it’s 1995… Udo wants you to throw it out. No, seriously. He called frying the worst thing we’ve ever done to food. It destroys the oils and creates toxic molecules your body has zero clue how to break down.
And no, coconut oil, ghee, or avocado oil aren’t off the hook either. It’s less about which oil and more about what the heat does to it.
It’s Not About Fear, It’s About Better Choices
This isn’t a “toss your pantry and cry” situation. It’s a know better, do better kind of vibe. According to Udo, if we just treated our oils with more care, kept them cool, out of light, and used them AFTER cooking, we’d see a huge difference in our energy, skin, hormones, and even mood.
And yes, you can absolutely have glowing skin, juicy joints, and a happier brain just by switching up your fats. No diet drama required.
So, what do you do now?
Audit your oils. If it’s clear, in a plastic bottle, or has a shelf life longer than a toddler’s attention span… it might need to go.
Use oils AFTER cooking. Steam or sauté in water, then drizzle your high-quality oils on top. Bonus: it tastes better!
Focus on balance. Omega 3s and 6s need to be in the right ratio, and most of us are waaay off. That means more flax, hemp, chia, or a quality blend like Udo’s 3-6-9.
Final Thoughts from a Reformed Oil Abuser…
I’m the first to admit I used to think good oil = health halo. But after this conversation, I’m seeing things real different.
This isn’t just about oil. It’s about what happens when we stop listening to marketing and start listening to our bodies.
If you’ve been doing all the “right” things but still feel inflamed, dry, foggy, or just… off? This might be the missing piece.
