Let’s just get this out of the way…
If January diets worked, you wouldn’t still be Googling “why can’t I lose weight after 40” every single year.
And yet… here we are.
You’re not lazy.
You’re not broken.
You’re not “bad at discipline.”
You’re just trying to use a strategy that was never built for a midlife body.
And honestly? January might be the worst possible time to start a diet especially if you’re over 40, perimenopausal, menopausal, or postmenopausal.
Let’s talk about why.
January has this sneaky energy.
Fresh calendar.
Fresh planner.
Fresh sense of “I’m getting my life together.”
It feels responsible to start a diet in January. Like… if you don’t, are you even trying?
But here’s the truth most people won’t say out loud:
January dieting works because it gives your anxious brain something to control.
Checklists.
Rules.
“Eat this, not that.”
Do this workout.
Avoid that food.
And if you’re anything like the women I work with, you’re really good at following rules. You can white-knuckle just about anything… for a while.
But that doesn’t mean it’s sustainable.
Here’s the part no one prepares you for.
After 40, your body changes.
Your stress response changes.
Your hormones change.
Your recovery changes.
And yet the advice stays the same:
Eat less. Move more. Try harder.
That’s a problem.
Because after 40, your body isn’t looking for punishment it’s looking for safety.
When you pile restriction on top of holiday stress, travel, sugar, disrupted sleep, and emotional overload, your nervous system doesn’t think, “Ah yes, glow-up season.”
It thinks: “Threat detected.”
And when your body feels threatened, it does what it’s designed to do:
Holds onto weight
Cranks up cravings
Tanks your energy
Makes consistency feel impossible
This is why so many women feel like their metabolism is “broken.”
It’s not broken.
It’s protective.
Here’s the part that stings a little.
January dieting gives you the illusion of control.
It feels productive.
It feels responsible.
It feels like you’re finally “doing something.”
But what it often does is delay the real work:
Learning how to eat, train, and live in a way that actually fits your life now.
Not your 30-year-old life.
Not your pre-kids life.
Not your “I used to do two-a-days” life.
Your current life.
And I know this because I lived the extreme version.
I competed in fitness shows. January was go-time. No social life. No flexibility. Tunnel vision. And yeah… it worked.
Until it didn’t.
Because I wasn’t training for life. I was training for a deadline.
And most women over 40 don’t want to live like that anymore. They want energy, confidence, freedom, and a body that doesn’t feel like it’s fighting them.
Here’s what January actually is:
A recovery month.
A stabilization month.
A “let’s stop the chaos” month.
Your nervous system is still coming down from:
Holiday stress
Family dynamics
Travel
Schedule chaos
Emotional overload
And then we expect it to thrive under restriction?
Nope.
January is about creating safety, not scarcity.
It’s about asking:
What can I do consistently right now?
What feels doable instead of dramatic?
What supports my energy instead of draining it?
This is where most people miss the magic.
It’s Doing One Thing Well
You don’t need a 12-step plan.
You don’t need to “lock in.”
You don’t need a full reset.
You need one to three non-negotiables you can actually stick with.
That might look like:
Eating enough protein
Going for daily walks
Getting to bed earlier
Drinking more water
Strength training a few days a week
Not all of it.
Just enough to build momentum.
Because consistency doesn’t mean constant.
It means repeatable.
And that’s where real change happens.
Let’s clear this up:
You’re not late.
You’re not behind.
You didn’t miss the window.
You’re just finally ready to do this in a way that doesn’t burn you out.
January isn’t about punishment.
It’s about setting the runway.
And if you do that right?
The rest of the year gets a whole lot easier.
