If you’re over 40 and still chasing the scale like it owes you something—this post is for you.
I recently sat down with fellow health coach Olivia Young on the Fit Girl Magic Podcast, and we had the kind of convo that more women need to hear: the real deal on maintenance, performance, and what happens when you finally decide to stop shrinking and start living.
Let’s start with this:
Olivia and I were both bought into the idea that hunger was a badge of honor and that feeling smaller automatically meant we were doing it “right.”
But here’s what changed everything…
Maintenance Isn’t a Plateau—It’s a Power Move
When Olivia started focusing on maintenance instead of constantly trying to lose weight, everything clicked.
“I just kept thinking… I lose the same 10 pounds every year, and I’m tired,” she said.
Same, girl. Same.
So, what’d she do? She ditched the tracking apps and started listening to her body. Not only did her strength go up, but her energy did also too—and (get this) she didn’t blow up the scale.
Both of us agreed: maintenance is actually harder than dieting because you’re not chasing a number. You’re learning to trust your body, and that takes reps.
Why Fueling Matters More Than You Think
Ever try to crush a 5AM workout on an empty stomach? Yeah… we’ve been there too.
Olivia shared how she used to believe in fasted training—until she realized it left her completely drained. “I was 22, waking up at [4:30]AM to train, and I had zero energy left by noon. That’s not healthy,” she said.
Now? She fuels before her workouts with something simple, like a GoGo Squeeze applesauce pouch or a Body Armor drink. Just 15g of carbs made a massive difference.
And this isn’t just about performance—it’s about your metabolism. You can’t build muscle or recover properly if you’re always under-fueled.
Performance > Obsession
Most women think “performance” means running a marathon or hitting a PR at the gym. But Olivia broke it down:
Performance is about progress, not perfection.
And for my gym rats out there—yes, progress might slow down the longer you train. But that doesn’t mean you’re doing it wrong. It means your body is adapting, and it’s time to get strategic instead of obsessed.
Let’s Talk Scale Drama
“I told myself: as long as I stay within a 5-pound range, I’m winning,” I shared on the episode.
Olivia agreed. Daily fluctuations are normal. Hormones, sleep, stress, hydration, workouts—they all play a role. The scale doesn’t tell the whole story, and it never did and never will.
What does matter? How you feel. How strong you are. How you recover. And how sustainable your habits actually are.
Real Talk: You Deserve to Feel Good
If you’re exhausted, constantly hungry, skipping meals, and wondering why your body isn’t responding anymore—you’re not broken. You’re burned out.
And it’s time to stop white knuckling your way through another program or fasted workout.
Instead, start here:
Because the real flex?
Feeling strong, fueled, and fully alive.
